Cruel exports
Horses from Winnipeg sent abroad for slaughter

By: Janine LeGal
Posted: 2:00 AM CDT Saturday, Mar. 18, 2023

Horses have forever been admired, featured prominently in popular children’s books and television programs, noted for being sleek, majestic, poetry in motion. But they also have a high level of emotional intelligence. A University of Sussex study found that horses can read emotional cues from our facial expressions, not only recognizing human emotions, but also deeply absorbing them.

Colleen Walker

LITTLE RED BARN

Colleen goes on to share some of her personal experiences and how valuable horses in the care of the Little Red Barn have been to those lucky enough to spend time with them.

Further on in the article…

Some of the facts about the slaughter of horses in Canada for human consumption are well expressed – as well as an overview of the export of horses to Japan (and other markets) for slaughter for the same purpose.

It can be jarring then, to know that Canada slaughters roughly 25,000 horses annually and is one of the top exporters of horse meat in the world, with an annual revenue of roughly $80 million.

Canada’s horse exportation industry ships from 3,000-5,000 horses annually. (Canada has exported more than 40,000 draft horses since 2013.)

Draft horses bred specifically for exportation are shipped out from Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg. This, despite the fact that more than two-thirds of Canadians are against exporting live horses for slaughter, according to Manitoba Animal Save, an animal advocacy organization. The Liberal Party committed to banning the practice in its September 2021 election campaign but, as of yet, nothing has changed.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

For the last 5 years, Danae Tonge of Manitoba Animal Save has witnessed firsthand the loading of horses at the Winnipeg Airport – horses destined for slaughter in Japan (and sometimes Korea).

“They are terrified, subject to turbulence and air pressure changes and some may fall during turbulence or take off, and be trampled by their crate mates, unable to escape. They cannot move around; they cannot lay down.”

Tonge recalls a recent horse shipment from Winnipeg in which travel time had exceeded more than 30 hours. Three horses were found down in their crate upon arrival in Japan. There have been several documented incidents of injured or dead horses on flights from Canada to Japan.

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including  Japan.

The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT  horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan,  to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.

A SOFT LANDING | HAPPY ENDING

Along with all our initiatives here at Ban Horse Slaughter – all the ways we are working to put an end to the slaughter of horses in Canada – including horses imported from the USA – slaughter for any purpose — we LOVE sharing happy endings!

Having said that for every horse that is lucky enough to have a soft landing and a guardian angel, how many others are not so lucky?

As you watch the news clip please pay special attention to the use of the word “euthanize”.

This Standardbred horse went from the track to an Amish family and when the horse was involved in a buggy crash, the newscaster states that a decision was made to euthanize the horse.

The way, the Amish family chose to euthanize is NOT what we call humane euthanasia.

Selling a horse to a kill buyer who in turn forces horses on crowded trailers and hauls them sometimes first to a feedlot and then ships them in leg-breaking trailers for 3 or more days to Canada or Mexico – in extreme heat and extreme cold, without food or water or vet care…

Where the next step is to be stunned – and properly stunned or not — strung up and their necks slashed – yes, often while conscious – to bleed out, slowly and painfully…

How dare that be called euthanasia.  Torture, barbaric, cruel, and so many other words come to our minds.

PUBLIC HEALTH RISKS OF HORSEMEAT

PUBLIC HEALTH RISKS OF HORSEMEAT

AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

Quotes are taken from a review published January 26, 2023, titled

A review of horses sent to slaughter for human consumption: impact of horsemeat consumption, residual banned drugs, and public health risks

…the exportation of American horses across both borders for the sole purpose of slaughter for human consumption must end.

Surely if more people in North America and the rest of the world realized that horses and other equines are slaughtered for human consumption in Canada and Mexico, the slaughter of all equines would be banned.

Horses slaughtered in Canada and Mexico include horses exported in leg-breaking trailers from the USA for as long as 3 days without food or water or vet care.

The horses slaughtered include a small percentage raised specifically for meat but the vast majority are pet horses, rodeo and racing “stock”.

In other words, horses that have at the very least been treated with wormers and, in many cases, other drugs that are not meant ever to enter the human food chain.

And before you think it doesn’t matter to you because you don’t eat horsemeat…

In 2015 a study at the University of Guelph, sponsored by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency found that horsemeat shows up on Canadian grocery store shelves marked as other than horsemeat.

In other words, if you are Canadian and eating meat you may be eating toxic horsemeat without knowing it.

Perhaps even more disturbing the Canadian Food Inspection Agency was quoted as saying, they were NOT surprised horsemeat is being sold in Canada marked as other than horsemeat.

Food prices have risen dramatically since 2015, so it makes sense that food fraud may also be on the rise.  Purchasing a horse not raised for slaughter, a discarded pet or racehorse for example is far cheaper than buying beef cattle raised under strict protocols.

Keep reading to learn why millions of pounds of horsemeat produced in Canada is toxic.

Previous work showed that 18 Thoroughbred racehorses purchased by rescues that would have otherwise been sold for export for the sole purpose of slaughter to produce meat for human consumption were administered [highly toxic to humans] phenylbutazone.

“Horses are prone to developing musculoskeletal injuries due to their various roles including pleasure riding, hunter/jumper, racing, and other performance-type work.

The most common drug to treat musculoskeletal injuries in horses is phenylbutazone.

Based on the annual sales of phenylbutazone [commonly known as BUTE] in the United States, our group estimated that every adult horse receives at least 1 dose of phenylbutazone during its lifetime.

There are 500 pounds of dressed horsemeat per horse.

The number of American horses exported to Canada for slaughter in 2019 was 10,486; this translates into 5,243,000 pounds of dressed horsemeat.”

Given that the US Department of Agriculture does not have a system to remove horses administered banned substances from the slaughter pipeline, more than 5,000,000 pounds of dressed horsemeat sent to the EU and non-EU countries in 2019 were likely contaminated with banned substances.

“The FDA considers American horses as companion animals and as such all approved drugs can be administered.

The “administration” of phenylbutazone or any other banned substance is not allowed in food-producing animals.

Both EU and non-EU governments have published a list of banned drugs and drugs with withdrawal periods.”

The magnitude of the issue is further complicated by the fact that Canadian residue testing represents less than 1% of the total carcasses tested.

You can read the full review from the American Veterinary Medical Association here.

Help support our efforts to ban the slaughter of horses for any purpose within Canada – including those imported from the USA. We are committed to supporting efforts to ban the export of horses from the USA for slaughter and… We’re also working to stop the inhumane live export of horses from Canada to markets like Japan for slaughter there.

HAPPY CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES DAY

HAPPY CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES DAY

First published July 1st, 2020.

Yes, even though for now the United States does not allow for the slaughter of horses in the United States, Canada does allow horses to be slaughtered for human consumption.

Horses raised in Canada as pets, and “working” horses like racehorses are not the only horses slaughtered in Canada, additionally, horses from the United States are shipped to both Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered.

You may be like many Canadians who had no idea.

Or you may be among the growing number who do know, and who are attempting to have the laws within Canada changed so that this barbaric practice is put to an end.

You may be thinking that the horses slaughtered are old and sick and decrepit and in some instances that is the case…

BUT even if some of the horses that are being slaughtered are no longer able to perform their “jobs”, is the torturous journey and horrible fate of being slaughtered at a “plant” a humane form of euthanasia?

Keep in mind that horses are being slaughtered that are not necessarily specifically raised for slaughter and that horse meat can easily be tainted with drugs, including wormers and pain killers that are commonly used on horses.  Drugs that are clearly marked as not for use on animals entering the human food chain.

Early this year there were TWO recalls of horse meat in Canada, horse meat that was unfit for human consumption because of a drug often administered to horses.

YOU MAY BE EATING HORSE MEAT AND NOT KNOW IT

Also keep in mind that according to a recent study by the University of Guelph, in Ontario, Canada, horse meat is ending up on the shelves of grocery stores, but not marked as such.  Learn more here

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD MANDATE LETTER

Special thanks to Horse Rescue Fund board member Michele Bruno for pointing out this Ministerial Mandate Letter, dated today, December 16th, 2021 from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Minster of Agriculture and Agri-food, the honorable Marie Claude Bibeau.

As you may or may not know, during the recent Federal Election, the Liberal Party of Canada included the following on their official party promises:

Now that the Liberal Party has been re-elected, there are horse, and other animal advocates, who have grown impatient — but let’s keep in mind that the Liberals just returned to Parliament –  after re-election on November 22, 2021 – and again today is only December 16th.

I know, I know we are all very impatient but it’s a good sign that the same line appears in the official Ministerial Mandate Letter from Prime Minister Trudeau to Minister Bibeau.

It does not mean that the live export of horses for slaughter has been banned, it simply means that the Liberal Party has not forgotten their election campaign promise and that it is still part of the “conversation” and even though it’s not a done deal, it is BIG NEWS and you should all pat yourselves on your backs.

Again, it’s most definitely a step in the right direction – congratulations.

So what else can we do to bring about change?

Canadian icon and staunch anti slaughter advocate, Jann Arden recently posted the following:

AND you can click here and send a note, to not only the Member of Parliament for your electorial district but also to Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Marie Cluade Bibeau.

P.S. There’s even a letter for you to use and/or personalize.

Alberta: Bill 1 Eliminates Right to Protest

Alberta: Bill 1 Eliminates Right to Protest

Those of us involved with attempting to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption, within Canada and beyond, are sickened to learn that Bill 1, which criminalizes protests on public and private property in Alberta, Canada has been granted royal assent and passed into law.

It received royal assent on the morning of June 17, 2020 and comes into effect immediately.

The excerpts that follow are from two posts from the University of Calgary [Alberta, Canada] Faculty of Law website.

The first post written by: Jennifer Koshan, B.Sc., LL.B (Calgary), LL.M. (British Columbia). Professor. Member of the Alberta Bar.

The second by: Alexandra Heine, Juris Doctor (J.D.)

IN CANADA, INCLUDING ALBERTA, WE HAVE COME TO EXPECT THE FOLLOWING:

“The purposes of social protest demonstrations are to make the public aware of group or social interests, to call for deliberate action, and to insist on the recognition of marginalized interests and rights.

In a democracy, those engaged in peaceful protests must be free to demonstrate in places of safety – places where they are not subject to arrest and punishment simply for being present in a public space.

Too often, where the police are under pressure to enforce the letter of the law, the spirit of the law is undermined. In those instances, the police enforce “petty” laws that escalate into violence, abuse and fear.”

RIGHT?

“While only five sections long, [Bill 1] manages to prohibit a wide range of conduct, grant extraordinary powers to police and other peace officers, and impose significant sanctions on those who contravene the legislation.” [AKA the right to hold a peaceful protest.]

Section 2 of Bill 1 lists this as one of  the prohibitions:

2(1) No person shall, without lawful right, justification or excuse, wilfully enter on any essential infrastructure.

The term “essential infrastructure” is defined in section 1 of Bill 1 and it captures a broad range of infrastructure including pipelines, railways, public utilities, and agricultural operations…

It includes streets, thoroughfares, parkways, driveways, and alleys, “whether publicly or privately owned, that the public is ordinarily entitled or permitted to use for the passage or parking of vehicles.”

It also includes sidewalks, ditches, and land between fences and highways.

“It’s hard to believe that in Alberta, Canada the right to protest any cause, even on private property, has essentially become illegal.”

Section 3 of Bill 1 states that anyone who contravenes section 2 is guilty of an offence and liable, in the case of a first offence, to a minimum fine of $1,000 and a maximum fine of $10,000, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, or both.

In the case of a second or subsequent offence, an individual is liable to a minimum fine of $1,000 and a maximum fine of $25,000, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, or both. The Bill also sets significantly higher fines for a corporation that commits an offence.

“Section 4 gives peace officers the power to arrest without a warrant any person who contravenes subsection 2(1), (2), or (3).”

“What we see in Bill 1 is an attempt by the government of Alberta to penalize all protests that are group activities, and perhaps individual entry onto essential infrastructure too.”

Bill 1 does not even pretend to facilitate and channel social protest demonstrations into locations that are acceptable and safe for both protesters and other members of the public.”

“While Bill 1 may dissuade some from what are lawful protests based on their Charter rights, there will always be those like Martin Luther King for whom oppressive laws are not a deterrent to civil disobedience and protest (see Letter from a Birmingham Jail).”

Mass arrests and charges are foreseeable, but the cost of challenging even some of these arrests will be prohibitive for most.”
