WE LOVE KEYBOARD WARRIORS

KEYBOARD WARRIORS ARE INCREDIBLY VALUABLE

First published, October 13, 2018 – Updated April 19, 2026

The graphic says we love “keyboard warriors” — and we do.

Somewhere along the way, that phrase started being used as an insult. A way to dismiss people. To minimize their impact. To suggest that what they’re doing doesn’t count.

It shouldn’t be.

Because the reality is, those so-called “keyboard warriors” are often the reason people know what’s happening in the first place. They’re the ones sharing the posts, keeping stories alive, making sure cases don’t quietly disappear, and helping information reach far beyond a single page or person.

Every like, every meaningful comment, every share helps signal to the algorithm that a post matters — and pushes it in front of more people who otherwise would never have seen it.

We’ve all seen how one share turns into many, and how those overlapping circles of people can carry a message further than any one person ever could alone.

That’s not something to dismiss. That’s something to recognize.  Something of great value.

Please don’t diminish your impact by saying “I can only…”

There is no only in advocacy — every like, every comment, every share carries a message further than you can see, and it matters more than you know.

Not everyone is in a position to own horses, to rescue, to transport, or to fund large-scale efforts.

But that does not make their contribution any less valuable. Advocacy takes many forms, and the online space is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Awareness leads to pressure. Pressure leads to change.

So “keyboard warrior” should never be used as a put-down.

If anything, it should be a label worn with pride.  Because using your voice, sharing information, educating others, and helping important conversations reach the people who need to see them… that matters.

It matters a lot.

And to everyone who shows up in that way — thank you.

HELP BAN HORSE SLAUGHTER IN CANADA & BEYOND

Canadians are horrified to see some countries eat dogs & cats, yet in Canada, in a largely unknown business, beloved horses are being tortured and killed for their meat for human consumption – INCLUDING pet horses.

Every year, thousands of horses in Canada are flown overseas for slaughter — including to Japan.  The way in which they are transported in no way resembes how show, race or other sport horses are shipped.

These long-haul flights are legally permitted to last up to 28 hours, but evidence shows that this limit is often exceeded.

Horses — large draft breeds — are crammed into wooden shipping crates with no access to food, water, or veterinary care for the duration of transport.

Documented cases show horses arriving injured, collapsing on landing, or dying en route.

In 2023, Liberal MP Tim Louis introduced Bill C-355 to ban the live export of horses from Canada for the purpose of slaughter.

The bill passed the House of Commons with the support of every Liberal, New Democratic Party, and Green Party Member of Parliament, and without the support of a single Conservative or Bloc Québécois MP.

Despite passing Parliament, the bill stalled in the Senate and ultimately died when the federal election was called in April 2025.

During Senate consideration, repeated procedural delays — including those led by Senator Rob Black — were used to run out the clock on the bill.

As a result, the barbaric live export of horses from Canada for slaughter continues today.

We are grateful to Senator Pierre Dalphond for championing Bill C-355 in the Senate. His dedication to protecting horses in Canada is deeply appreciated — and we urge Senator Dalphond to reintroduce similar legislation.

BUT THIS IS A TWO-PART FIGHT

Horses are also slaughtered domestically in Canada — including pets, workhorses, racehorses, rodeo horses, sport horses, and horses imported from the United States.

Unlike traditional food animals, horses in Canada and the United States are routinely treated throughout their lives with medications such as phenylbutazone (“bute”), dewormers, and other drugs that are toxic to humans and explicitly prohibited from the human food chain.

These toxic to humans substances are commonly administered without any lifetime tracking system or withdrawal framework suitable for food safety.

And despite less than 1 percent of horse carcasses being tested in Canada for toxic drugs — recalls of horsemeat occur.

ARE YOU EATING HORSE MEAT WITHOUT KNOWING?

A study funded by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and conducted at the University of Guelph found that horse meat has entered the Canadian food supply mislabeled as other meats — and the CFIA stated it was not surprised by the findings.

With food prices and cost-of-living pressures rising, it is difficult to believe that food fraud will disappear without stronger oversight and an end to horse slaughter altogether.

PROTECT HORSES & PUBLIC HEALTH

Whether exported alive or slaughtered domestically, horses are being forced into a system that was never designed to protect their welfare or public health.

With your support, we can push for legislation that bans both the live export of horses for the purpose of slaughter and the domestic slaughter of horses in Canada.

By signing your name to the following ready-to-send email, you are helping send a clear message: it’s time to end this cruelty — and the risks that come with it — for good.

THE LETTER IN THE FORM READS…

Subject: Ban the Live Export of Horses for Slaughter and End Horse Slaughter in Canada

Dear Prime Minister Mark Carney, Minister Heath MacDonald, and Senator Pierre Dalphond,

I am writing as a concerned Canadian to urge your support for legislation to end horse slaughter in Canada — both the live export of horses for the purpose of slaughter and domestic horse slaughter within Canada.

In 2023, Bill C-355, introduced by MP Tim Louis, passed the House of Commons with the support of Liberal, New Democratic Party, and Green Members of Parliament. However, the bill stalled in the Senate and died when the federal election was called in April 2025. As a result, the live export of horses from Canada for slaughter continues today.

I thank Senator Dalphond for his leadership on this issue and respectfully urge the reintroduction and full government support of legislation to finally end this practice.

Horses slaughtered in Canada — including companion, sport, and working horses, as well as horses imported from the United States — are not raised or regulated as food animals.

Throughout their lives they are commonly treated with medications prohibited from the human food chain, creating ongoing animal welfare and food safety concerns.

A study funded by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and conducted at the University of Guelph found horse meat entering the Canadian food supply mislabeled as other meats. Whether exported alive or slaughtered domestically, horses are being placed into a system never designed to protect their welfare or public health.

I respectfully ask you to support legislation that bans the live export of horses for slaughter and ends domestic horse slaughter in Canada.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

HORSES SLAUGHTERED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

Every year thousands of horses are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption, but you can help us ban horse slaughter in Canada and beyond.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada, and much of it is shipped to the European Union, and other markets, including Japan.

This barbaric practice is currently not legal in the United States, so horses from the United States are shipped to Canada, and to Mexico, to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air to Japan for slaughter, is far from humane.

Alberta: Bill 1 Eliminates Right to Protest

Alberta: Bill 1 Eliminates Right to Protest

Those of us involved with attempting to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption, within Canada and beyond, are sickened to learn that Bill 1, which criminalizes protests on public and private property in Alberta, Canada has been granted royal assent and passed into law.

It received royal assent on the morning of June 17, 2020 and comes into effect immediately.

The excerpts that follow are from two posts from the University of Calgary [Alberta, Canada] Faculty of Law website.

The first post written by: Jennifer Koshan, B.Sc., LL.B (Calgary), LL.M. (British Columbia). Professor. Member of the Alberta Bar.

The second by: Alexandra Heine, Juris Doctor (J.D.)

IN CANADA, INCLUDING ALBERTA, WE HAVE COME TO EXPECT THE FOLLOWING:

“The purposes of social protest demonstrations are to make the public aware of group or social interests, to call for deliberate action, and to insist on the recognition of marginalized interests and rights.

In a democracy, those engaged in peaceful protests must be free to demonstrate in places of safety – places where they are not subject to arrest and punishment simply for being present in a public space.

Too often, where the police are under pressure to enforce the letter of the law, the spirit of the law is undermined. In those instances, the police enforce “petty” laws that escalate into violence, abuse and fear.”

RIGHT?

“While only five sections long, [Bill 1] manages to prohibit a wide range of conduct, grant extraordinary powers to police and other peace officers, and impose significant sanctions on those who contravene the legislation.” [AKA the right to hold a peaceful protest.]

Section 2 of Bill 1 lists this as one of  the prohibitions:

2(1) No person shall, without lawful right, justification or excuse, wilfully enter on any essential infrastructure.

The term “essential infrastructure” is defined in section 1 of Bill 1 and it captures a broad range of infrastructure including pipelines, railways, public utilities, and agricultural operations…

It includes streets, thoroughfares, parkways, driveways, and alleys, “whether publicly or privately owned, that the public is ordinarily entitled or permitted to use for the passage or parking of vehicles.”

It also includes sidewalks, ditches, and land between fences and highways.

“It’s hard to believe that in Alberta, Canada the right to protest any cause, even on private property, has essentially become illegal.”

Section 3 of Bill 1 states that anyone who contravenes section 2 is guilty of an offence and liable, in the case of a first offence, to a minimum fine of $1,000 and a maximum fine of $10,000, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, or both.

In the case of a second or subsequent offence, an individual is liable to a minimum fine of $1,000 and a maximum fine of $25,000, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, or both. The Bill also sets significantly higher fines for a corporation that commits an offence.

“Section 4 gives peace officers the power to arrest without a warrant any person who contravenes subsection 2(1), (2), or (3).”

“What we see in Bill 1 is an attempt by the government of Alberta to penalize all protests that are group activities, and perhaps individual entry onto essential infrastructure too.”

Bill 1 does not even pretend to facilitate and channel social protest demonstrations into locations that are acceptable and safe for both protesters and other members of the public.”

“While Bill 1 may dissuade some from what are lawful protests based on their Charter rights, there will always be those like Martin Luther King for whom oppressive laws are not a deterrent to civil disobedience and protest (see Letter from a Birmingham Jail).”

Mass arrests and charges are foreseeable, but the cost of challenging even some of these arrests will be prohibitive for most.”

Equestrian Canada wants YOUR feedback…

Thank you Debby Murtagh of Canadian Horse Defence Coalition for bringing this to my attention.

The deadline to email your thoughts is November 4th, 2019.  Please take 2 seconds to send an email right now.

If you have been following along you are likely aware that Canada allows for the slaughter of horses within Canada.  Horses are routinely slaughtered for human consumption, some of the meat is sold within Canada and much of it is shipped to other markets including the European Union.  Yes really.

You may also be aware that horses are shipped live to Japan and South Korea to be slaughtered (and eaten) there, and that the conditions they endure are inhumane.

If you’ve been following along you are likely aware that the slaughter houses in Canada take the word of any one selling an equine to them, that they are the rightful owner.  There are not any checks and balances in place, as a result…

You are also likely aware that horses are often slaughtered the same day they are sold to a slaughter house which means that in some cases stolen horses have been butchered for meat before the owner even knows their horses are missing.

Do you want to see a nationwide Equine Identification System in place?

If so PLEASE send them an email and let them know you support their proposal.

This tracking system would cover not only registered/pedigreed horses but also horses of unknown backgrounds.

You can send an email here…
