YOU CAN HELP BAN THE SLAUGHTER OF HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

Horses are slaughtered within Canada.

Others are imported from the United States for slaughter in Canada.

Thousands more are exported overseas to be slaughtered – including to Japan.

This continues because the slaughtering of horses within Canada and the export for the purpose of slaughter is legal.

These, for the most part are NOT “purpose-bred” meat horses.

Horses slaughtered within Canada include, but are not limited to, off-the-track racehorses, racing industry discards, rodeo stock, carriage and work horses, and privately owned companion pets — young and old, across all breeds and types. Even pregnant mares and stolen horses.

Horses exported for slaughter are referred to as ‘surplus’ horses, are draft horses or draft crosses –  and again are NOT only those  ‘purpose’ bred.

Ban Horse Slaughter was founded in 2016 after decades of advocacy and 12 years of hands-on rescuing horses before they entered the slaughter pipeline.

That work continues today — intervening directly, purchasing horses from kill buyers and from First Nations bands before horses are shipped for slaughter.

We know this system from the inside.

And we are working to end it. Permanently.
