CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including  Japan.

The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT  horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan,  to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.

BAN HORSE SLAUGHTER

American Wild Horses slaughtered for human consumption

American Wild Horses slaughtered for human consumption

Picture: Bureau of Land Management Oregon

Excerpts from an article by Sam Block from https://newfoodeconomy.org

“Equine slaughter has been banned in America for over a decade. But the horse meat trade is still thriving.”

“For decades, BLM has rounded up wild horses and burros, aiming to do it every three to five years. Right now, a round-up is underway in Nevada. Last year, the bureau removed 11,472 wild horses and burros nationwide, more than in the three previous years combined. But its taxpayer-funded corrals and pastures, where horses wait to be sold or adopted, are nearing capacity.

The pressing question is where to put this growing population once existing options are full. Slaughtering horses for food is illegal in the U.S., but a market exists beyond our borders, in Europe, Japan and Russia. This is why brokers called “kill buyers” send trailers full of horses, both wild and domestic, into Mexico and Canada, where slaughter is legal. Last year, 81,573 horses made the trip.

Wild horses are a minority in the disposable horse population, though they have an impact out of proportion to their numbers: They make it more difficult for ranchers to raise the cattle we eat. Once shipped out of the U.S., they are outnumbered at foreign slaughterhouses by privately-owned riding horses or racehorses sold for an array of reasons—too old, too small for a growing rider, too expensive, not fast enough, or excessive in some way that an owner found intolerable.”

Nathaniel Erskine-Smith (MP)

Nathaniel Erskine-Smith (MP)

You may remember that Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) board member Shelley Grainger was able to secure the sponsorship of M.P. Nathaniel Erskine-Smith for an e-Petition calling for a ban to  the inhumane transport of horses by air, to slaughter.  (It’s now closed).

Well that is NOT the only way that this Liberal Member of Parliament for Beaches East York, Ontario is sympathetic and friendly to animal rights.

Take a moment to read this post to learn more about Nate and what he stands for including when it comes to animal and human rights.  As aways, please feel free to share too.

YOU can have a say in the questions that are asked of Canadian Federal Election Candidates during the upcoming televised debate, but hurry the deadline is fast approaching.

https://cbcnews.ca/debate

Scroll to the bottom of the page and fill out the form.  If enough of us ask for the Candidates’ views on the slaughter of horses within Canada for human consumption, and the inhumane transport of horses to Japan and South Korea to be slaughtered…  Imagine the increased awareness we can create.

When you scroll down on the link above there is a space on the form for TWO questions…

EXAMPLE:  Feel free to copy and paste.

I would like to know how each of the leaders feel about 2 related issues, first the slaughter of horses within Canada for human consumption within Canada and the export of that meat to other markets.

Second, how do each of the leaders feel about the inhumane shipping of horses by air to Japan and South Korea to be slaughtered there for human consumption?

NOTE:  The online submission form closed September 22nd, 2019 BUT you can still ask any of the candidates questions, see #2 below.

EVENT Calgary: Canadians Against Live Export

EVENT Calgary: Canadians Against Live Export

Canadians Against Live Export – YYC is a dedicated group of volunteers who are committed to ending the live shipments of horses from Calgary International Airport, specifically horses destined to be slaughtered for human consumption in So. Korea and Japan.

Make no mistake about it, these horses are not treated with any where near the same respect that horses who are being shipped for competition, for example horses that are being shipped to and from Spruce Meadows in Calgary.

CALEYYC writes:

“We are trying to raise awareness of the plight of draft horses that are exported from Calgary (YYC) to Japan for slaughter. Regulations are frequently broken/ not enforced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency during these shipments. Suffering is inherent in long distance transport, and YYC [Calgary International Airport] should not be involved in this cruel industry that sends horses half way across the world, crammed into crates without food and water, to be slaughtered on another continent.”

You can learn more about this amazing group on their Facebook Page (including how you can participate in upcoming events, rallies and pickets) at:  https://www.facebook.com/CALEYYC/?eid=ARCGRvGxU9eMYTDA5di9eqpMOZs1aPA1VRUiLSgsGO_Spqe4LhZOyoc1UuEkjhazkZf06pjZFXXwiTQ8

Kaley Cuoco – Big Bang Theory

Kaley Cuoco – Big Bang Theory

30 SECOND VIDEO

You probably recognize Kaley Cuoco from the TV series, “The Big Bang Theory“, but did you know she is an avid horsewoman and that in February 2016, she participated in a campaign that contributed to stopping the slaughter of horses for human consumption within the United States? [Watch the video BELOW.]

American horses are still routinely shipped to either Mexico or Canada for slaughter, so there is still work to be done.

2023 UPDATE:  For the time the inspection of horses being slaughtered in the USA is still not being funded by the US government.  However, thousands of horses are still routinely shipped from the USA to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

The horses exported from the USA to Canada and Mexico include pet horses, race horses, rodeo stock, and sport horses — horses of all types and all ages.

Horses are hauled in leg-breaking trailers for up to 3 days at a time without food, water or vet care and in extreme cold and heat.

Recently a push – AKA the SAFE ACT –  to stop the export of horses from the USA to Canada and Mexico for slaughter failed but the act got further through the political system/process than previous attempts and rumour has it that as early as May of 2023 another version of the SAFE ACT may be launched.

You can learn more about the SAFE ACT here.

Click here for steps you can take right now to help ban the slaughter of horses within Canada and beyond, including the live export of horses to Japan to be slaughtered there.
