WILD VS FERAL HORSES

WILD VS FERAL HORSES

SO, IN CANADA — ARE THEY WILD OR FERAL?

You may have noticed since the shooting earlier this month of 17 wild horses in British Columbia, Canada that there’s been an increase in the chatter about whether horses in British Columbia and other parts of Canada who run free are wild or feral.

You may also have noticed that we rarely post on social media, or on this site without a call to action also known as a CTA.

We like to educate and raise awareness, then provide solutions, and courses of action that we are taking to make a difference and that others can join us in doing to help horses and other equines.  Whether that be stopping the slaughter of horses within Canada, for human consumption or any purpose, including those imported from the USA for slaughter here (or in Mexico) or stopping the live export of horses from Canada to Japan – or anywhere else — for slaughter.

So what is the Call To Action (CTA) when it comes to helping horses like these 17 who were needlessly shot on Crown land?

That’s a good question.  A very good question.

First, let’s start with a recent article in the Globe and Mail.  (For our non-Canadian friends The Globe and Mail is a newspaper printed in five cities in western and central Canada and often referred to as the country’s “newspaper of record”.  Current readership is estimated to be around 2 million.)

And starts out:

The recent slaughter of 17 wild horses in British Columbia’s Interior devastated members of the local community who regard them as an ancient and enchanting part of the landscape. However, the horses are thought of by others as pests, grazing machines that out-compete important species for food and territory.

Even ecologists disagree on whether wild horses deserve more protection.

As you read further you’ll find the article goes on to state:

Cpl. Lepine anticipates charging whoever is responsible for the killings under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which carries a maximum punishment of $75,000 in fines and two years in jail.

A bit futher in the article…

The free-roaming horses are culturally significant to the Skeetchestn Indian Band, a community with deep roots in horsemanship that has held a rodeo for well over 100 years, according to former band councillor Terry Deneault.

In a statement released Wednesday, the band said that it was “saddened” by the “heinous crime” that occurred

“As our stories tell us, we are connected to all animals that walk, fly and swim, and it is our responsibility to ensure that all life is respected and cared for,” the statement said.

“While these horses did not live on Skeetchestn’s land and the crime occurred outside of our community, we are mourning the unnecessary loss of wildlife that we share this beautiful landscape with.”

So the comments in the article from the former band council member tell us that at least some in the First Nations community most directly “related” to this herd of horses consider the horses to be wild.

Those comments pleased us greatly because as the title of the Globe and Mail article states, the local community is divided and that has been our personal experience when it comes to the wild horses of British Columbia.

We’ve experienced – NOT with this particular Band – some members of other First Nations Bands who when wild horses are being a nuisance the horses are wild, but at other times some of the horses are used for trail rides, then turned out to fend for themselves for the winters – including horses that are branded.

Perhaps even more disheartening, members of more than one band in B.C. routinely round up these wild horses and ship them directly to slaughter in Alberta for human consumption.

We are NOT saying this is the norm.

AND we also want to say that there are groups within many bands and WHOLE bands who are working hard to protect horses and who treat them with respect.

Back to the article…

In B.C., as in the rest of Canada save for a handful of small reserves, free-roaming horses aren’t considered “wild” since the government doesn’t consider them to be native to the land. They are instead branded as “feral,” which disqualifies them from most wildlife protections.

Wayne McCrory, a biologist in B.C. who has studied free-roaming horses in Canada extensively, thinks new legislation is necessary.

It’s time to ramp up protection, both federal and provincial, in my opinion, to stop this senseless slaughter when some trigger-happy person just decides to take the law into his own hands,” Mr. McCrory said.

Mr. McCrory is involved in research on Chilcotin horses’ DNA that could prove they’re descendants of horses that arrived in Canada in the 1700s. This could help establish that the horses are native to the land and therefore eligible for protection.

So there it is, there is a possible call to action, a CTA.  Reach out to your Member of Parliament and your BC MLA and ask them to designate this herd as wild horses.

We do need to say that the article continues with a different point of view, that being that wildland resources would be better served by protecting land from horses, in favour of harder to sustain wildlife species.  You can read the full article here.

“It is acknowledged that these horses are of cultural significance to the local Skeetchestn Band.”

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including  Japan.

The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT  horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan,  to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.

Cruel exports
Horses from Winnipeg sent abroad for slaughter

By: Janine LeGal
Posted: 2:00 AM CDT Saturday, Mar. 18, 2023

Horses have forever been admired, featured prominently in popular children’s books and television programs, noted for being sleek, majestic, poetry in motion. But they also have a high level of emotional intelligence. A University of Sussex study found that horses can read emotional cues from our facial expressions, not only recognizing human emotions, but also deeply absorbing them.

Colleen Walker

LITTLE RED BARN

Colleen goes on to share some of her personal experiences and how valuable horses in the care of the Little Red Barn have been to those lucky enough to spend time with them.

Further on in the article…

Some of the facts about the slaughter of horses in Canada for human consumption are well expressed – as well as an overview of the export of horses to Japan (and other markets) for slaughter for the same purpose.

It can be jarring then, to know that Canada slaughters roughly 25,000 horses annually and is one of the top exporters of horse meat in the world, with an annual revenue of roughly $80 million.

Canada’s horse exportation industry ships from 3,000-5,000 horses annually. (Canada has exported more than 40,000 draft horses since 2013.)

Draft horses bred specifically for exportation are shipped out from Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg. This, despite the fact that more than two-thirds of Canadians are against exporting live horses for slaughter, according to Manitoba Animal Save, an animal advocacy organization. The Liberal Party committed to banning the practice in its September 2021 election campaign but, as of yet, nothing has changed.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

For the last 5 years, Danae Tonge of Manitoba Animal Save has witnessed firsthand the loading of horses at the Winnipeg Airport – horses destined for slaughter in Japan (and sometimes Korea).

“They are terrified, subject to turbulence and air pressure changes and some may fall during turbulence or take off, and be trampled by their crate mates, unable to escape. They cannot move around; they cannot lay down.”

Tonge recalls a recent horse shipment from Winnipeg in which travel time had exceeded more than 30 hours. Three horses were found down in their crate upon arrival in Japan. There have been several documented incidents of injured or dead horses on flights from Canada to Japan.

A SOFT LANDING | HAPPY ENDING

Along with all our initiatives here at Ban Horse Slaughter – all the ways we are working to put an end to the slaughter of horses in Canada – including horses imported from the USA – slaughter for any purpose — we LOVE sharing happy endings!

Having said that for every horse that is lucky enough to have a soft landing and a guardian angel, how many others are not so lucky?

As you watch the news clip please pay special attention to the use of the word “euthanize”.

This Standardbred horse went from the track to an Amish family and when the horse was involved in a buggy crash, the newscaster states that a decision was made to euthanize the horse.

The way, the Amish family chose to euthanize is NOT what we call humane euthanasia.

Selling a horse to a kill buyer who in turn forces horses on crowded trailers and hauls them sometimes first to a feedlot and then ships them in leg-breaking trailers for 3 or more days to Canada or Mexico – in extreme heat and extreme cold, without food or water or vet care…

Where the next step is to be stunned – and properly stunned or not — strung up and their necks slashed – yes, often while conscious – to bleed out, slowly and painfully…

How dare that be called euthanasia.  Torture, barbaric, cruel, and so many other words come to our minds.

RCMP INVESTIGATE SHOOTING OF 17 WILD HORSES ON CROWN LAND

March 14, 2023

March 15, 2023

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP ) in British Columbia, Canada say that 17 horses are dead after being shot on Crown land west of Kamloops.

The Tk’emlups Rural RCMP say officers were called to an area north of Walhachin for reports that several horses had been killed.

Mounties say the horses are believed to be part of a wild herd that often comes to the area.

“The motive behind this disheartening act cannot be confirmed at this point. However, investigators will continue to collect and examine everything available,” a news release reads.

“It is acknowledged that these horses are of cultural significance to the local Skeetchestn Band.”

RCMP GIFT KING CHARLES A HORSE

MEANWHILE IN CANADA THOUSANDS OF HORSES SLAUGHTERED

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police carefully select and we know just as carefully make arrangements for a horse to be delivered to King Charles, yet here in Canada thousands of horses are slaughtered each year for human consumption.

Pet horses, rodeo horses, sport horses, racehorses – and yes some are bred specifically for their meat but the vast majority are not.

Oh, and we don’t discriminate. Young, old, healthy or sick it doesn’t matter. Even pregnant mares are slaughtered.

And not just horses bred in Canada – we allow the import of the same types of horses from the USA.

You see the USA no longer allows the slaughter of horses within its borders, so Canada helps out.

Canada also allows for the inhumane transport of horses to Japan to be slaughtered there.

Inhumane transport that in no way shape or form resembles how the King’s new horse was shipped.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has been caught red-handed multiple times NOT following national and International shipping regulations.

INCLUDING very recently with a horse shipper ADMITTING ON CBC THE NATIONAL that regulations were knowingly broken.

TWO SLABS OF MEAT?

TWO SLABS OF MEAT?

VETTY & NEWPY BY CHARLOTTE JOHNSTON

Very special thanks to Charlotte Johnson for sharing this with us…

To whom it may concern.

Attached to this letter are pictures of two horses.

Can you tell if this is the same horse at a different angle or two completely different horses altogether?

When a horse goes for slaughter, their halter is removed and added to the ever-growing pile.

Once in the slaughter pipeline, horses are stripped of absolutely everything. Their dignity, their identity, their halters, their shoes, their names, and so much more.

But they are given one thing. They are given a kill tag, a tag with a number to keep track of them while they are shipped from place to place until they get to their final destination, never to be heard of again. A place that will give them a horrific end to a life they may have only started to live.

The only thing valued in these horses at this point is meat.

Did you know, the workers loading the horses into the trucks that will take them to the slaughterhouses pry off the horses’ hind shoes to reduce the risk of bruising the meat on the live horses?

Normally when a farrier takes the shoes off a horse, it is done gently and properly so it does not hurt the horse. Only someone who is specifically trained to do this should be allowed to.

Instead, these workers who are not trained to work with the horse’s hooves, rip the shoes off and usually end up taking part of the hoof off as well. This is just like cutting off your toes and then being forced to walk and stand in a strange, new, and scary environment without even a second to rest for days, while in a tremendous amount of pain.

We would never do this to our dogs or cats because they are classified as pets. Even though the majority of Canadians view horses as pets, our government doesn’t agree.

So why do we allow it to happen to our horses?

Our agriculture industry is still classifying equines as livestock and allowing inhumane treatment and slaughter of horses for human consumption.

These horses are suffering because auctions are turning a blind eye to inhumane treatment, and furthermore, the rules and regulations in regard to horses at the auctions are outstandingly inadequate and in need of major improvements.

The horses in the pictures are indeed different horses. If you look closely, you can see the bigger white stripe on one’s nose, and though it is not very evident in these pictures, this horse has four bright white socks and the biggest personality. His name is Vetty.

The second horse has a smaller white stripe, four faded white socks, curious ears, and beautiful eyes. Her name is Newpy.

These horses are not numbers on their way to slaughter. But they would have been, if a rescue had not of saved them and brought them to my house where I promised them, I would always love them.

I chose these pictures because you cannot see the difference between these two horses with the fly masks on.

This is what the workers at the slaughterhouses see. To them, all the horses look the same, it is just another slab of meat.

The slaughterhouse workers do not see the four white socks, or the different white stripes and they certainly do not see their different personalities.

But I can.

In the middle of the night when you cannot see anything, I can tell my horses apart by the sound of their call.

I can tell them apart by their walk, their eyes, their colour, and the stripes on their noses.

I can tell you anything you want to know about those animals and more.

Every horse deserves to always be known by their name, to always keep their halter and their shoes, and to always be free to express their different and very special individual personalities.

Please, join us in continuing to push this awareness forward.

We want to see an end to this cruelty, and we genuinely hope you recognize how you can help us achieve this.

Love,

An unforgettable voice

THANK YOU CHARLOTTE
