Dear “Candidate Name”,
I am a voter in your electoral district and I am writing to you today to share with you an issue that is very important to me.
As you may or may not know, thousands of horses are slaughtered in Canada annually for human consumption.
Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union.
A 2019 Nanos poll showed that the vast majority of Canadians polled are opposed to the slaughter of horses for human consumption.
Most Canadians consider horses pets, and the same way we wouldn’t consider eating dogs and cats, we are appalled to find out that pet horses are slaughtered within Canada to be eaten here and abroad.
Perhaps even more appalling is the fact that horses are shipped via air, and as reported by Lisa LaFlamme on the CTV National news, often crammed 3 to 4 horses per wooden crate at a time, without food or water — only to be fattened up on Japanese feedlots and slaughtered there for human consumption.

Make no mistake about it, as you can see for yourself in the recent CTV W5 expose, the way in which these horses are shipped, in no way resembles the way pet or show horses are shipped by air.

2021 MP sponsored petition calling for the banning of the shipping of horses to Japan for slaughter was signed by a staggering 77,656 Canadians — which as I am sure you know is an extremely high number of signatures for a petition of this type.
The majority of the horses slaughtered in Canada are pet horses, race horses and rodeo stock. Horses that have been routinely treated with at the very least wormers, and in many cases pain medications that are clearly marked as not being intended for use on animals that are to enter the human food chain.
Recently there have been recalls of horse meat within Canada that have been found to contain meat laced with drugs that are not safe for human consumption.

The regulations in place to protect the Canadian food supply from drug tainted horse meat are minimal, and there are documented cases of stolen pet horses being slaughtered the same day they are illegally sold to slaughterhouses in Alberta and Quebec.

In 2015 the University of Guelph conducted a study, and found that horse meat shows up on Canadian grocery store shelves, for example in sausages, but the labels make no mention of horse meat. So even those Canadians who don’t think they are eating horse meat, may be eating horse meat.
The study was commissioned by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and as CTV, CBC and the Toronto Sun all reported, the CFIA was “not surprised” by the results.

In addition to the recent expose by W5, Maclean’s ran an article in March of 2020, that was not flattering to horse slaughter within Canada, or of horses from Canada being shipped to, and slaughtered in, Japan.

Early in 2020 Canadian icon Jann Arden started tweeting daily about the horrors and dangers of horse slaughter, to her 335,000 strong army of followers. She is as vocal on her Facebook page with 250,00 followers and on her Instagram account with 182,000 followers. She’s even started a hashtag campaign and coordinating website:

Canadian actress Kate Drummond is also an outspoken advocate for banning horse slaughter, she’s using her celebrity voice and social media accounts to educate Canadians and Americans.
Recently Canadian television personality, Melissa Grelo of CTV’s The Social, has joined the fight against horse slaughter in Canada and beyond.
The word is getting out.
As more and more Canadians learn what is happening they are shocked and appalled.
It’s only a matter of time before more Canadian celebrities join the ranks of American celebrities including Tony Robbins, Bo Derek, Melissa Etheridge and Willie Nelson in speaking up about the atrocities of horse slaughter in Canada.

(The USA has defunded inspections of horses at slaughter plants in the United States and as a result horse slaughter is currently not legal in the U.S., so horses from the United States are being shipped to be slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. That’s why American celebrities are speaking out against horse slaughter in Canada.)
So the question is, where do you stand on horse slaughter within Canada and beyond?
Please spare me the basic form letter. I would like to know exactly where you stand. Are you for, or against, horse slaughter? And if you are against the inhumane slaughter of horses in Canada, what do you plan to do about it?
Thanking you in advance!
Yours truly,
