VALAURIE WRITES:

💜Jack and Jill are HOME💜

Jan. 21 2022: I get a message from a lady saying her Husband was up in the helicopter and saw a pack of wolves eating something fairly big by Tubbs Lake.

To make sure it wasn’t my horses, we sent up a drone to check out the area.

After reviewing the footage at home we spotted two horses along a fence line that looked very veeeery similar to Jack and Jill.

Jan. 22 2022: 💜 THE DAY OF THE REUNION 💜

We went out there on horseback and a bit on foot as the snow was VERY deep and THERE THEY WERE!

It looked like they have been in that spot for a few days as there were lots of tracks and poop. They both lost weight but aren’t super skinny, they have lots of energy, didn’t seem tired at all.

As soon as I put them back Jill took her job back of bossing everyone around and Jack was happy to see his buddies.

Honestly it all still seems so unreal…

THEY ARE HOOOOOOME!!! 💜💜💜💜

Now what do I think happened…?

Right now I am just incredibly relieved and happy that I have them back home.

.I will share more in the next days after getting some emotional and physical rest

JANUARY 19TH, 2022 STILL MISSING

Two Fjord cross draft horses named Jack and Jill went missing on December 18th/19th from Flying Rooster Farm, near Spruce Hills Resort in 108 Mile House, BC.

After EXTENSIVE searches and no tracks or signs of the horses foraging for grass in the snow, it has been determined that they were stolen.

Brand inspectors in both British Columbia and Alberta, and at the Bouvry Slaughter Plant in Alberta –  as well as horse auction businesses – and the RCMP in both provinces – have been notified.

Yes, horses are slaughtered in Canada for human consumption and that’s why the brand inspector at the Bouvry Slaughter plant in Alberta have been contacted.

When horses are sold to, and dropped off, at slaughter plants in Canada, unless a horse has a visible brand, a horse can be slaughtered the same day they are delivered.

The only proof of ownership required is for the person, or persons, dropping off the horse or horses to claim that they are the rightful owners.

Fortunately these horses are branded but the owner is not taking any chances and doing everything she can to make sure these horses are not slaughtered.

Recently (see below) there have been reminders to those of us living in Canada, or near the Canadian border, that we live within a day’s drive – or at most 2 day’s drive – of  plants that slaughter horses – and that stolen horses are slaughtered for human consumption.

With precious few protocols in place, other than the honor system, as to who is the rightful owner of a horse, and with “same day slaughter” as drop off, often being the case, we all need to  know exactly what to do —  and who to call — should any of our equines go missing.

Yes, like it or not horse slaughter is legal in Canada and stolen horses have been slaughtered before owners even know they are missing. (CHECK our BLOG for more details..)

To repeat, there are not any mandatory hold times after a horse is sold to a slaughter plant, so horses are often slaughtered the same day they arrive at a slaughter plant.

In other words, many Canadians could come home from work, or wake up in the morning to find that a horse, or horses, are missing, and our horses could be slaughtered for human consumption – before we know they are gone – and without us being notified first.

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including  Japan.

The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT  horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan,  to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR HORSE IS MISSING

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR HORSE IS MISSING

IF YOUR HORSE IS MISSING OR STOLEN…

UPDATED:  First published October 2016:

I’m sorry to have to tell you this but as long as horse slaughter exists in Canada, even if you are not sure that your horse has been stolen, but is missing,  the BEST thing to do is to IMMEDIATELY call the brand inspector at the nearest horse slaughter plant.

Please EVEN if you are not in Alberta or Quebec where horse slaughter plants are, call the brand inspector for the areas where the plants are.  (See below.)

AND yes, even if your horse does not have a brand, call.  I repeat, your horse does not have to be branded for you to call the brand inspector.

Call your local brand inspector as well.

(Be prepared, take a few moments right now, and save the numbers where you have other emergency numbers.)

CALL THE RCMP or your local law enforcement and FILE A REPORT with livestock investigators.

Unfortunately many have reported that they’ve struggled to get RCMP or other law enforcement to file a report, be prepared to be firm, to insist.

Please don’t trust that your local brand inspector will make the call to the brand inspector at the slaughter plants, for example, to the one for  Bouvry Exports Slaughter Plant in Fort McLeod, Alberta — please make that call yourself.

Unfortunately in Canada horses dropped off for slaughter are often slaughtered the same day they are dropped off.

And unfortunately the protocols in place at slaughter facilities are very lax when it comes to protecting against stolen horses being slaughtered.

(See several examples of stolen horses being slaughtered for human consumption below.)

Believe it or not there is NOT a mandatory hold time before horses sold to slaughter plants are killed. Again,  horses may be slaughtered the same day they are dropped off.

AND ownership, as well as declaring whether or not drugs not intended to enter the human food chain have been used on a horse — are BOTH on the honour system.

(That’s just one reason reason why horse meat produced in Canada is NOT safe to eat, and why recalls of drug tainted horse meat are a regular occurrence.)

Again,  proof of ownership, and whether the horse is safe to eat,  are BOTH based purely on the word of the person selling the horse to the slaughter plant.

The exception is if the horse has been branded and that brand is easily visible.

Keep in mind that often brands on horses are not very easy to spot, especially in the winter when horses generally have a heavier, thicker coat.

Horses, are for the most part, not branded and when they are there is not any consistency with where that brand might be.  The brand might be on the front on either side or the back on either side making it even harder for a brand inspector to do their job.  Even if your horse is branded, please don’t trust that it will keep them safe.

With slaughter plants in both Quebec and Alberta, most Canadians, and many in the USA, live within a few hours, and at most a 1 to 2 day drive of a horse slaughter plant.

With same day as drop off slaughter and with ownership proof being on the honor system,  your horse could be stolen during the night, or while you are at work — and slaughtered before you even realize your horse is missing.

PLEASE take a few minutes, do the research and mark down the numbers of your local brand inspectors and brand inspectors for where the horse slaughter plants are in Canada, so that if you should – heaven help – ever need them, you have them handy!

As well as brand inspectors, make note of horse auctions in your province and neighbouring provinces.

For example, no matter if you live in Alberta or not, if you are in Western Canada and your horse goes missing your first call should be to Tim, the brand inspector for Fort MacLeod where the horse slaughter plant in Alberta is.  His number is: (403) 634-5799

WESTERN CANADA & USA

IF you are in Western Canada or the western part of the USA your first call should be to he brand inspector for Fort MacLeod, Alberta Tim.  His direct line is: (403) 634-5799

Again, even if your horse does NOT have a brand, call.

The slaughter plant in Fort MacLeod, Alberta, Canada is Bouvry Exports AKA Bouvry Canada and their phone number is: (403) 253-0717

File a report with the RCMP or local law enforcment.

HORSE MEAT VERSUS BEEF

HORSE MEAT VERSUS BEEF

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EATING HORSE MEAT VERSUS CHICKEN, PORK, LAMB OR BEEF?

That is a fair question and one that those of us dedicated to ending the slaughter of horses in Canada and beyond, for human consumption, are frequently asked.

Let’s start by saying that many of our advocates have embraced the worldwide trend towards veganism.

Of course not everyone is vegatarian or vegan – or interesed in converting – we understand that.

But even so, there are many reasons why eating horses is different than eating meat from livestock that has been specifically raised to be slaughtered for meat.

HORSES SLAUGHTERED FOR MEAT INCLUDE PETS

First, many, if not most, of the horses slaughtered in Canada are former pets and other horses, including racehorses,  that have routinely been treated with drugs that are not intended for use on animals entering the human food chain.

For example, wormers.  Ask your horse owning friends how often they worm their horses.

Most horse owners worm their horses at least twice per year, and wormers are generally marked with instructions that they are not to be used on any livestock to be consumed by humans.

Another drug that is also not meant to be used on livestock entering the human food chain is a drug horse owners refer to as “bute“. The proper name is phenylbutazone.

Bute is used to treat everything in horses from minor muscle aches to inflammation to abscesses of the hoof,  lameness, arthritis, and so much more.

Again, ask your horse owning friends, and chances are good, that at one time or another, they have used bute on their horses.

DRUG TAINTED TOXIC HORSE MEAT RECALLED FROM CANADIAN GROCERY STORE SHELVES

Recently there have been multiple recalls from Canadian supermarket shelves of horse meat contaminated with Clenbuterol, which like bute is highly toxic to humans.

And these types of recalls of drug tainted, toxic to humans horse meat have been going on for years.

For most people that’s enough to make them decide that eating horse meat is probably not a great idea.

BUT WAIT, THIS IS CANADA

There MUST be rules in place to make sure that horses treated with drugs, not meant to enter the human food chain are not slaughtered for human consumption – right?

Well, there are regulations in place.

The problem is, and the reason why drug tainted toxic horse meat ends up on Canadian supermarket and other store shelves — is that the rules are based on the honour system.

Those presenting horses to be slaughtered are asked to fill out an Equine Identification Document (EID) stating that the horse is rightfully owned by them, and that the horse is free of toxic drugs.

So meat AKA kill buyers picking up cheap horses from ads in the newspaper ,or online from sources like Kijiji, or Craig’s List, or from auctions, don’t have  full medical histories on the horses they are reselling for slaughter.  Yet, they fill out EIDs stating that the horses they are presenting are clear of any banned drugs.

The word of those presenting the horses is good enough for the slaughter houses.  Again, a form is filled out, on the honour system.

Hence the 2019 and 2020 recalls of drug tainted, toxic horse meat and…

Again, recalls have been going on for years..

This is far different than how other animals raised specifically for human consumption are regulated.

The industry is so poorly regulated that even stolen horses are slaughtered and butchered for meat, the same day they are sold to a slaughterhouse.

Check out “Sold for Hamburger” and  “2 Pet Horses Stolen and Slaughtered for Human Consumption“.

YOU MAY BE EATING TOXIC HORSE MEAT WITHOUT KNOWING

A recent study by the University of Guelph showed Canadians eating meat, may be eating horse meat without realizing it.

The federal agency charged with keeping the food supply of Canadians safe, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was NOT surprised horse meat was found on Canadian grocery store shelves marked as other than horse meat.

Yes really.

Did you get that?

The CFIA were not surprised.  So is it any wonder as Canadians learn about pet horses and other horses not raised specifically for meat being slaughtered in Canada – and sold as food fit for humans, they are outraged.

HORSES MAY BE STRUNG UP WHILE STILL ALIVE

On February 27th, 2021 CTV’s W5 aired an Investigative Report on the inhumane live shipment of horses to Japan to be slaughtered there for human consumption.

Unlike horses slaughtered within Canada for human consumption, most of the horses that are live shipped to Japan  have been specifically raised for meat, The W5 program was titled “Flight Animals“.

Those of us who understand horses “got” that the title referred to horses being flown to Japan, and that there is another meaning.

Many animals when faced with danger will stand and fight, but horses are what are referred to as “flight” animals because when frightened they will do their best to flee.

The fact that horses are flight animals is a huge problem when horses are in the process of being slaughtered within Canada, because as flight animals they will often seriously injure themselves as they attempt to flee, as they are about to be slaughtered…

And to make matters even worse, the methods used in Canada to slaughter horses were not designed specifically for horses, so they are not adequate to guarantee an instant death.

This results in horses that are sometimes still alive when hung up by one leg,  to have their throats slashed, to be bled out.

I”ll spare you the gory videos here, but you can Google and visit YouTube to learn more.

WOULD YOU EAT DOGS OR CATS?

A recent Nanos poll shows that a majority of Canadians do not agree with the slaughter of horses for human consumption. — I think it is because many of us consider our horses to be family members, the same way we consider our cats and dogs family members, and the vast majority of Canadians, at least in my humble opinion, wouldn’t think for even a second, that it is appropriate to eat a cat or dog.

You can learn more about many of the points raised above, and about horse slaughter for human consumption — by clicking on the blog posts below…

And if you are as appalled by this barbaric practice, as the majority of Canadians are, please reach out to your Member of Parliament and let them know how you feel.

Spread the word to your friends in Canada, Europe and Japan that Canadian horse meat is full of drugs and chemicals that specify “not to be used on animals for human consumption”.

Okay, so you may be thinking to yourself, “But I don’t eat horse meat so what do I care if twice in the last 30 days, horse meat produced in Canada has been recalled due to being tainted with dangerous drugs, drugs that horses are routinely treated with that are not meant to enter the human food chain?”.

I hear you, and before I go any further you may want to keep in mind that in the summer of 2015, FOUR major news outlets in Canada reported that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was NOT surprised that horse meat was ending up in Canadian supermarkets, but not marked as horse meat.

Oh and these types of recalls of drug tainted, toxic to humans horse meat have been going on for years.

December 18, 2019

AND

January 14th, 2020

Health Canada reports:

Viande Richelieu brand horse meat recalled due to presence of clenbuterol.

While some of the affected product may have been exported to other countries, this recall is for horse meat distributed in Quebec.

Clenbuterol is often used to treat horses with conditions such as Inflammatory Airway Disease and heaves. The administration of this drug is prohibited from use in animals that produce food or are intended for consumption as food.

This is yet another example of how the honor system when it comes to presenting horses to be slaughtered for human consumption is not working.

These kinds of recalls have been going on for years.

Stolen Horse Owner becomes Anti Horse Slaughter Advocate

Stolen Horse Owner becomes Anti Horse Slaughter Advocate

In late Septemer 2018, the horse world in Canada was captivated and hearts went out to Cindy Thomas, the owner of a stolen Clydesdale mare named Molly.

The story spread like wildfire and was instrumental in educating more Canadians than ever to the fact that horses are routinely slaughtered in Canada for human consumption.

Yes, really.

Horse meat is consumed in Canada, and much of what is “processed” in Canada is shipped to other markets including, but not limited to the Eurpoean Union, Japan, China and South Korea.

This barbaric practice is currently not allowed in the United States but American horses are routinely shipped to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered for human conumption.

Molly’s owner Cindy Thomas was shocked to learn that when horses are sold to, and dropped off, at slaughter plants in Canada, that unless a horse has a visible brand, that same horse or horses can be slaughtered the same day they are delivered.  The only proof of ownership required is for the person, or persons, dropping off the horse or horses to claim that they are the rightful owners.

City TV Edmonton was the first to pick up the story, and Cindy who was just starting to understand the horrors of horse slaughter did an amazing job of making sure those watching knew there was a chance that her stolen horse (or any other horse in Canada) could be slaughtered for human consumption.  You can watch the news clip by clicking here.

City TV Edmonton also did a follow up story and once again Cindy Thomas managed to make sure that those watching realized that horse slaughter for human consumption is something that is allowed in Canada.  You can watch the 2 minute follow up story by clicking here.

The CTV Edmonton News Report (VIDEO ABOVE) about Molly the missing Clydesdale references a story from 2017, where two pet horses were slaughtered for human consumption.  Details on that story may be found by clicking here.

Global TV Edmonton ran the video above and an article here.

Thankfully Molly was found wandering near Cindy’s home on December 24th, 2018.

She was in decent shape, her mane and tail recently brushed, and free of debris.

She was obviously being hidden some where, and because the press and the public did not let up on pressure to find her, she was set loose by those who had stolen her months before.

Since Molly’s return Cindy Thomas has become an even more outspoken advocate for horses who might other wise be slaughtered for human consumption.

Cindy has networked and put together a team of like minded individuals, who in the first 3 months of  2019 have saved over 80 horses, who would otherwise have been slaughtered.

Cindy and her team have worked countless hours, to foster, feed, and where necessary secure veterinary care for these horses, and they’ve carefully screened potential homes and placed many.

Unfortunately the paper trail when selling horses for slaughter is extremely weak.

Horses can be dropped off at a slaughter plant, and the person dropping off simply fills out a form stating that they are the rightful owner of the horse and that it has not been treated with drugs that are not meant to enter the human food chain.

The document when selling horses to a slaughter facility is based on the honour system.

(This is why eating horse meat “produced in Canada is NOT safe”.)

There is NOT a mandatory hold time before slaughtering a horse that has been sold directly to the slaughter plant

There is NOT any verification of ownership required by the slaughter house (unless the horse is branded  (What if the horse has a winter coat, or the brand is barely legible even in the summer?) and again horses may be slaughtered the same day they are sold to the slaughter facility.

AS A HORSE OWNER….

Really think about that for a moment.

Depending on where you live, especially if you are in British Columbia, Alberta or Saskatchewan, you could be at work, Someone could pull in, load your horse, drive to a slaughter plant in Alberta (OR QUEBEC) and YOUR horse could be sold and slaughtered before you even know that he or she is, or they, are missing.

Stolen Horse Sold for Hamburger

Stolen Horse Sold for Hamburger

This story is definitely re-post worthy.

This story is a reminder to all of us in Canada who live within a days drive of where slaughter plants are in Alberta, or Quebec, about how easy it would be for any of our horses to be snatched and slaughtered before we even knew they were missing.

Think about how far you live from either Alberta or Quebec, a days drive, 2 days drive or less?

So this story is pertinent to those who live ANY where in Canada, but especially in the provinces of Alberta and Quebec and neighbouring provinces, like British Columbia and Ontario.

Every horse owner within Canada or the United States needs to be aware that any horse can be stolen and unless your horse is branded,  there are not protocols in place at Canadian slaughter plants, to double check that a horse is stolen.

There are also not any mandatory hold times after a horse is sold to a slaughter plant so horses are often slaughtered the same day they arrive at a slaughter plant.

In other words, many Canadians could come home from work, or wake up in the morning to find that a horse or horses are missing, and  our horses could be slaughtered for human consumption without us being notified first.

Slaughtering horses in Canada is legal.

The practice has been banned in the United States but horses from the United States are routinely shipped to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered.

There have been other well documented cases of horses disappearing and being slaughtered.

Listen to Kim and Sargon’s story on Blue Sky Radio.

So what can you do to help bring this barbaric practice to a halt?
