FORMER OWNER WANTS TO KNOW MARE IS OKAY

Her name may have been changed but it was Loki before she was sold.

November 2, 2023:  It is now believed that Loki was sold by  Josua Datu of Okotoks, Alberta to a Tiffany in British Columbia.  

Josua may have delivered Loki to a location in Kamloops but Tiffany may not live in Kamloops.  

This may or may not be accurate information.

NOTE:  This is NOT a stolen or missing horse situation, this is a situation where…

We’re betting the current owner would like to know more about Loki’s history and Emily would like to know that Loki is safe.

EMILY WRITES: 

A few years ago I sold my paint mare.

It’s probably a long shot but I would love to know that she is safe and if she is ever offered for sale, I would love to have the opportunity to buy her.

She was my whole world, but unfortunately, I was not in a position where I could keep her, I had to sell her.

Today I am a stay-at-home mom and I am in a position to properly care for a horse.

I would be thrilled to have her back again — OR at the very least — to know she’s happy, healthy and safe.

When I had her we used Loki as her call name but that name may not have followed her.

I believe she’s been sold about 3 times.

Her registered name is COOSIMASHADEOVERDUN. But the current owners may not know that.

She is a dun paint and she would be about 15 years old.

Please, please, please, if someone has her now or knows anything about her I would appreciate hearing from you!

She could be anywhere by now. Last I knew she was in Fort McLeod, Alberta and then rumoured to be north of Edmonton.

[NOTE:  November 2, 2023 it is now believed that Loki may be in British Columbia, that she was delivered to a location in Kamloops and that she was moved elsewhere from Kamloops.  Again, this is NOT a lost or stolen horse situation, but a curious previous owner.] 

I would be happy to travel to get her if by chance she is for sale, now or in the future — and again I would like to know that she is safe.

4 YOUNG HORSES IN A KILL PEN NEED HELP NOW!

Sometimes we have opportunities to buy horses on death’s doorstep.  YOUNG, healthy horses who are about to be slaughtered for human consumption.

This is one of those times.

4 young horses are sitting in a Canadian kill pen and we’ve negotiated the ability to be able to save them from slaughter but we need to raise $4,000 to get them out of harm’s way NOW.

We’ll need additional funds to vet them BUT we have a secure, safe, location to house them until permanent homes can be found and the immediate need is to get them out of the kill pen.

We need your help now to pull this off.

We are completely volunteer driven and we make every single penny count.  

The same way many hands make light work, even small donations can add up and make a HUGE difference!  

Thank you to all who contributed and shared this need.  The immediate needs of these horses have been met, they are safe and sound in a foster home.  Of course feeding, hoof care and regular veterinary care are ongoing and donations towards helping with their care are needed and appreciated.

WHY IS THERE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING BUYING HORSES DESTINED FOR SLAUGHTER?

Okay, so we are fully aware that purchasing horses from kill buyers or directly from First Nations bands is controversial.  Some rescues, organizations and individuals are NOT in favour of doing so.

The common objection from those opposed is that when you buy horses from kill buyers - or those First Nations' horses that are earmarked to be slaughtered for their meat - you are helping the kill buyers profit.

Our take is this...

Kill buyers are going to profit whether we buy a horse or horses from them, or not.

Kill buyers will sell the horses to the slaughter plant - either Bouvry in Alberta or (Bouvry is currently closed)  - Richelieu in Quebec - and kill buyers will profit from those sales.

The horses they sell for slaughter are going to go through the torture of being crammed in leg-breaking trucks, often in extreme temperatures and being transported to a slaughter plant -- and if they survive the trip -- they'll be slaughtered for their meat.

If we buy horses, they are spared that torture - and live.

Either way the kill buyer profits - that's why we negotiate the lowest prices we can (never more than what their meat would bring) and buy as many horses as we can.

We are often criticized as are those who have fostered horses with/for us.

THE MORE FOSTER HOMES WE HAVE THE MORE HORSES WE CAN SAVE

Right now we have 6 generous individuals and in some cases families, each with the space on their properties -  and in their hearts -  to take in a few horses each.

Adding a few more horses to a herd of any size, especially when hay prices in western Canada are at an all-time high - and winter will be here before we know it -  is a huge undertaking.

Add in the fact that as mentioned above, critics of buying horses from kill buyers can be brutal with their social media comments and we fully understand why potential foster providers are hesitant and why some choose to remain anonymous.

Tens of thousands of horses are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

The Bouvry slaughter plant is located in Alberta and the same family owns a horse slaughter plant in Quebec.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada, and much of it is shipped to the European Union, and other markets, including China and Japan.

This barbaric practice is currently not legal in the United States, so horses from the United States are shipped to Canada, and to Mexico, to be slaughtered.

In addition, Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption,  and unfortunately, the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air to Japan for slaughter, is far from humane.

Most of the following footage was shot at the Bouvry Slaughter Plant in Alberta, Canada.

Today, June 28th, 2023 the plant is NOT currently slaughtering horses but another plant in Quebec – owned by the same family is.

UPDATE:  There was a very short window in 2023 where horse slaughter stopped for a few weeks at the Bouvry plant in Fort Macleod, Alberta.  BUT it wasn’t long before the slaughter of horses started again.  You can find what’s happened since and more history about Bouvry Exports LTD here.

If you are an animal lover you know how hard fireworks are on dogs and cats, horses and other pets – even people are triggered by the loud noises created by fireworks – and what about farm animals and wild animals and birds?

The number of dogs and cats who break out and are lost, on and around holidays, when fireworks — often illegal ones are set off — is exponentially greater than at other times of the year.

NEW YEAR’S FIREWORKS LEAD TO HEARTACHE FOR NOVA SCOTIA HORSE OWNER

Fireworks also led to a missing dog, injured farm animals and a PTSD episode for a veteran,

 

Dawn Golding of Canning, N.S., is starting the new year with a broken heart, and an empty stall in her horse barn.

On New Year’s Eve, Golding said neighbours set off fireworks around 6:30 p.m., just before she was about to bring the horses into the barn for supper.

The horses, some boarding there and others owned by Golding’s family, were spooked and broke through fencing into an adjacent pasture. They then went into a field, and other nearby farms.

Golding and her daughter, Lauren, raced along behind the horses. Eventually they came upon their oldest horse, Navar, with a compound fracture.

“I found him on the ground, with his bone through his leg dangling off. It was probably the most horrific sight I’ve seen,” Golding said.

A veterinarian came out and determined Navar’s leg could not be repaired. He was put down, and Golding said she was at least glad he was taken out of his “excruciating agony” as quickly as possible.
