Thank you to Canadian icon Jann Arden for using her celebrity status to help a long time rescuer of horses destined for slaugher with a $1,000 donation.
AND once again Jann is raising awareness of the fact that horses are slaughtered within Canada and beyond — for human consumption.
As you may or may not know, Jann is spearheading a #horseshit campaign to raise awareness and funding to support CHDC (Canadian Horse Defence Coalition) and other not for profit organizaitons within Canada.
Many in Canada do not realize that horses are slaughtered within Canada for human consumption so when you hear 77 year old horse rescuer Raven Johnson and the newscasters from CBC refer to saving horses from the meat truck — you now know that at least some of the horses in the care of Earth Arc have been spared from ending up on dinner plates within Canada and other countries.
Raven Johnson of Earth Arc and her volunteers are currently looking after 18 horses.
Keep in mind that Raven is 77 years young, and is recovering from a broken tibia, and if you know anything about providing for horse you know that the monthly bill for looking after that many rescued horses is hefty, even without the inevitable emergency vet calls.
Located outside of Salt Springs, Nova Scotia, Canada, Earth Arc has multiple ways to donate.

Canada and horses. Extensive landscapes with herds. Groups of riders in the Rocky Mountains conveying campfire romance.
This is how the tourism platforms and brochures portray the “green” façade of Canada.
If you look behind, you will find the misery of tens of thousands of horses. Industrial factory farming of so called “slaughter” horses in huge feedlots.
Here the horses are fed sick with concentrated feed.
The only goal of the operators is to fatten the animals to their maximum slaughter weight.
There is no investment in veterinary care.
No money is spent on the protection against extreme temperatures reaching from minus 40 degrees Celsius in winter to plus 40 degrees Celsius in summer.
The horses are left out in the open.
Mares in labour are left to their own devices.
New-born foals freeze to death at birth.
Canada also slaughters thousands of US-horses for the EU and Switzerland.
An obligatory six-month quarantine for horses imported from the US is intending to protect consumers from possible drug residues in the meat of the slaughtered horses.
This rule extends the suffering of the horses in the Canadian fattening farms.
Animal Welfare Foundation / Tierschutzbund Zürich, Animals’ Angels Inc. and the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition have been documenting the horse feedlots at the Bouvry slaughterhouse for many years.
We were able to reduce the number of slaughtered horses from 90,000 to 30,000 horses per year. However, every tortured horse is one too many.
Our recent investigation from February 2021 shows that the suffering of horses continues.
In our petition to the EU Commission, we call for an import suspension of horse meat from cruel production.

Holly Andreosso is a Manitoba based horse welfare advocate dedicated to banning the slaughter of horses within Canada for human consumption.
Holly is also tireless in her efforts to educate others about the inhumane live export of horses by air to Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption.
Holly supports many organizations including but not limited to, Horse Heroes Alberta, Second Chance Cheekye Ranch, Final Furlong Thoroughbred Retirement, The 5 Freedoms Ranch Rescue and Rehabilitation Society and Sky Dog Ranch & Sanctuary.
Draft horses are shipped by air from Canada to Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption. The inhumane manner in which they are shipped, in no way resembles how horses NOT destined for slaughter, are transported by air.
For those people who say “That’s a lie, they’re not shipped like that, they have attendants and they can lie down. The breeders treat them like gold”, this 2 minute video and post are for you.
Flights carrying 80 to 120 live Belgian draft horses and Belgian crosses, leave three Canadian airports, Calgary International Airport (YYC), Winnipeg James Armstrong International Airport (WYG) and Edmonton International Airport (YEG).
The horses are shipped 3 or 4 to a crate even though Canadian and international regulations clearly state that they are to be shipped one to a crate.
These horses are shipped to Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption.
Unlike horses slaughtered within Canada for human consumption these horses are bred for this purpose in Manitoba and Alberta.
This inhumane, unnecessary, disgusting business is a $25 million a year business.
Korean Air Cargo, Atlas Air Cargo and Air Nippon Cargo are the carriers used.
The flights leave the airports anywhere between 2:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. under the cover of darkness, when there are not any passenger flights on the tarmac to see the horses waiting to be loaded into the 747 cargo jets.
If the horses are bred in Manitoba, the journey by truck depending on road and weather condistions is 4 to 5 hours.
It takes about 5 hours to load the horses into the crates (Do you think they go quietly and willingly?) and some flights stop in ANC/Anchorage, Alaska,
It’s a 2+ hour flight to ANC from YWG and they are in ANC for approximately 2 hours with the cargo hold sealed.
The flight to Japan is another 14 hours.
During the flight, horses slip and fall because of the turbulence, and as you can well imagine their crates are wet and slippery with their urine and stools.
Unfortunately, as a result, horses have died or been severely injured when trampled by their crate mates enroute.
They cannot lie down, they do not get any food or water from the moment they get on the trucks to the airport, until they reach the feedlot at the slaughter house in Japan.
Have you been keeping track of how many hours these poor horses go without food and water?
These horses are anywhere from 18 months old to 3 years old, so they are just babies.
In the following photo, you can see that these horses do not have room to put their heads up in a normal position.
THIS IS A CLEAR VIOLATION OF THE IATA LARS, (Live Animal Regulations for Shipping).
That netting and the top of their crates will barely clear the cargo hold ceiling for loading.
Imagine. In the dark. For 18 to 20 hours, in the cargo hold of a 747, unable to put your head up, unable to lie down, and your 2 or 3 other crate mates are just as terrified as you are.
You’ll endure turbulence while crammed in a crate with 2 to 3 other horses, plus 2 takeoffs and 2 landings. Again, while crammed in with other horses.
You will of course be afraid you’re going to die, and you can’t escape.
In the end, after all this fear, pain and suffering, you are indeed going to die.

Very special thanks to Member of Parliament Nathaniel Erskine-Smith for hosting Canadian icon, singer songwriter, author and TV star Jann Arden on his podcast “Uncommons“.
Like Jann, Nate is a tireless defender of animal rights and we so appreciate him using his platform to support Jann’s #horseshit campaign in support of the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition and the work that they, and others, are doing to ban the slaughter of horses in Canada and beyond.

Marie writes:
I first came to know of Cindy Thomas in 2018 when her horse Molly, a Clydesdale was stolen from her ranch in Alberta, Canada. The story went viral on social media and was picked up by press across the nation.
At the time Cindy wasn’t fully aware of what was going on with horses being slaughtered in Canada for human consumption, and she was appalled as she started to learn more.
I was totally blown away with how she handled the press that Molly’s story received, how even though she was, of course, extremely upset that her horse was missing — Cindy never missed a chance to tie into the interivews how horses are slaughtered in Canada for human consumption.
You can watch the TV interviews and learn more about Molly here.
I’d like to make you aware of a profound concern I have regarding horses here in Alberta. Our agriculture industry is still classifying equines as livestock, and allowing inhumane treatment and slaughter of horses for human consumption.
For the last two years, I’ve been active in saving over 550 horses from the slaughter pipeline.
I’ve attended auction sales at least twice monthly.
At every sale, I’ve witnessed horses in severely compromised conditions.
Horses with broken legs, severe injuries, illegally sedated horses (which permits toxic substances to get into the food chain via commonly used drugs such as phenylbutazone).
I’ve witnessed mares heavy in gestation, horses that are completely blind, emaciated horses and so much more.
I’ve had young foals die in my arms from hypothermia, I’ve also taken horses straight to the vet from sales to humanely euthanize them, and this is just the start of a continuous cycle.
Horses are suffering because auctions are turning a blind eye to inhumane treatment, and the rules and regulations in regards to horses at auctions are sadly very sparse and need improvement.
Please note I have documents photos and vet reports to substantiate the above claims.
Recently Jann Arden, a Juno award winning singer, songwriter and actress, hosted an ‘All Party Animal Welfare Caucus’ meeting on Zoom.
Over 50 interested MPs were in attendance, because of the public outcry that’s gaining phenomenal momentum.
Because of that same momentum W 5 and Maclean’s Magazine are in the process of doing additional pieces exposing how cruel horse slaughter is.
In 2011, under President Obama, the USA banned any type of funding for commercial horse slaughter, therefore shutting down any federally funded horse slaughter facilities. Canada could easily do the same.
In Alberta, there are at least 58 registered equestrian facilities, a minimum of 80 equine clubs, 45+ licensed equine assisted learning facilities (including trauma rehab for veterans), 16 equine specialist veterinarians, and a huge number of care givers (farriers, equine dentists, etc.).
There are over 12 large established Horse Rescue facilities in our province, showing the need for an honorable venue for horses in need.
This is not even remotely comparative to any other animal classified as livestock. Horses clearly are unique, and should not continue to be in this AG classification.
There are approximately eight places in Alberta that breed horses intentionally for human consumption. The number of horses sent for slaughter far surpasses the number specifically bred for this purpose. 95% of horses that enter the Bouvry slaughter plant were raised for pleasure and recreational purposes.
It is morally and ethically unacceptable to send a companion to be butchered and more and more Canadians are recognizing the need for change.
A recent Nanos poll shows a substantial 69% of Canadians are vehemently opposed to horses being slaughtered.
The movement to prevent our beloved horses from continuing to die at the hands of a 22-caliber rifle within Alberta, and a movement to prevent horses from being inhumanely transported to Japan for slaughter is growing exponentially every day.
Please note using a .22-calibre rifle to slaughter a horse, which is how Bouvry Exports here in Alberta slaughters horses, when that calibre is not legal for hunting purposes of an animal even half the size of a horse — is barbaric.
This clearly isn’t a case of farmers raising cattle to put food on our neighbors’ table, but rather, pet owners shirking responsibility and utilizing an inhumane system to dispose of an animal. We’re not permitted to do this to cats or dogs, and horses to the majority are viewed as the same, pets or companion animals, not livestock.
Please, join us in continuing to push this awareness forward.
Your supporters want to see an end to this cruelty and we genuinely hope you recognize how you can help us achieve this.
I, along with a multitude of other advocates, constituents, media outlets and more, have generated a variety of resolutions to implement a higher set of standards that we as Canadians are used to.
I would love the opportunity to discuss this with you further.
Cindy Thomas
Founder/ President of Horse Heroes Alberta
