Horse Rescue Fund

Horse Rescue Fund

Horse Rescue Fund is dedicated to raising funds and distributing those funds to equine rescues and sanctuaries in Canada and the United States that are registered charities — or not.

Horse Rescue Fund also recognizes the need, especially during these turbulent times, to help individuals who are trying to do the right thing, but struggling to care for their equines.

There are many cases where what might end with a beloved horse or horses being sent to slaughter, euthanized, sold or relinquished, can be prevented by a gift of funds.

While the founders, long time advocates for equines, wait for charitable status to become “official”, they’ve launched several initiatives including helping many  evacuate with horses and other pets during forest fires in British Columbia, Canada.

That help has has included financial assistance with feeding animals while displaced and helping replace winter feed and fencing destroyed by fire.

They’ve spearheaded the raising of funds for hay for the winter for an equine sanctuary in Nova Scotia.

Thoroughbreds who would otherwise have been shipped to slaughter have been helped in the southern USA and draft horses have been helped in the north eastern USA.

Hay is currently desperately needed in a situation where due to a debilitating accident resulting in a brain injury and wheel chair confinement, a family is in need of funding for hay for 6 horses for winter.  (Hay has been secured but not yet paid for in full.)

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including  Japan.

The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT  horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan,  to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.

Dear “Candidate Name”,

I am a voter in your electoral district and I am writing to you today to share with you an issue that is very important to me.

As you may or may not know, thousands of horses are slaughtered in Canada annually for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union.

A 2019 Nanos poll showed that the vast majority  of Canadians polled are opposed to the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

Most Canadians consider horses pets, and the same way we wouldn’t consider eating dogs and cats, we are appalled to find out that pet horses are slaughtered within Canada to be eaten here and abroad.

Perhaps even more appalling is the fact that horses are shipped via air, and as reported by Lisa LaFlamme on the CTV National news, often crammed 3 to 4 horses per wooden crate at a time, without food or water — only to be fattened up on Japanese feedlots and slaughtered there for human consumption.

banhorseslaughter.com/chdc-lawsuit

Make no mistake about it, as you can see for yourself in the recent CTV W5 expose, the way in which these horses are shipped, in no way resembles the way pet or show horses are shipped by air.

banhorseslaughter.com/w5A

2021 MP sponsored petition calling for the banning of the shipping of horses to Japan for slaughter was signed by a staggering 77,656 Canadians — which as I am sure you know is an extremely high number of signatures for a petition of this type.

The majority of the horses slaughtered in Canada are pet horses, race horses and rodeo stock.  Horses that have been routinely treated with at the very least wormers, and in many cases pain medications that are clearly marked as not being intended for use on animals that are to enter the human food chain.

Recently there have been recalls of horse meat within Canada that have been found to contain meat laced with drugs that are not safe for human consumption.

banhorseslaughter.com/drug-tainted-horse-meat-recalled-in-canada/

The regulations in place to protect the Canadian food supply from drug tainted horse meat are minimal, and there are documented cases of stolen pet horses being slaughtered the same day they are illegally sold to slaughterhouses in Alberta and Quebec.

banhorseslaughter.com/stolen-horse-sold-for-hamburger/

banhorseslaughter.com/2-pet-horses-stolen-and-slaughtered-for-human-consumption/

In 2015 the University of Guelph conducted a study, and found that horse meat shows up on Canadian grocery store shelves, for example in sausages, but the labels make no mention of horse meat. So even those Canadians who don’t think they are eating horse meat, may be eating horse meat.

The study was commissioned by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and as CTV, CBC and the Toronto Sun all reported, the CFIA was “not surprised” by the results.

banhorseslaughter.com/canadians-there-could-be-horse-meat-in-your-sausages/

In addition to the recent expose by W5, Maclean’s ran an article in March of 2020, that was not flattering to horse slaughter within Canada, or of horses from Canada being shipped to, and slaughtered in, Japan.

banhorseslaughter.com/macleans-canada-is-go-to-of-horse-slaughter

Early in 2020 Canadian icon Jann Arden  started tweeting daily about the horrors and dangers of horse slaughter, to her 335,000 strong army of followers. She is as vocal on her Facebook page with 250,00 followers and on her Instagram account with 182,000 followers.  She’s even started a hashtag campaign and coordinating website:

#horseshit

horseshit.ca

Canadian actress Kate Drummond is also an outspoken advocate for banning horse slaughter, she’s using her celebrity voice and social media accounts to educate Canadians and Americans.

Recently Canadian television personality, Melissa Grelo of CTV’s The Social, has joined the fight against horse slaughter in Canada and beyond.

The word is getting out.

As more and more Canadians learn what is happening they are shocked and appalled.

It’s only a matter of time before more Canadian celebrities join the ranks of American celebrities including Tony Robbins, Bo Derek, Melissa Etheridge and Willie Nelson in speaking up about the atrocities of horse slaughter in Canada.

banhorseslaughter.com/horses-in-our-hands

(The USA has defunded inspections of horses at slaughter plants in the United States and as a result horse slaughter is currently not legal in the U.S., so horses from the United States are being shipped to be slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. That’s why American celebrities are speaking out against horse slaughter in Canada.)

So the question is, where do you stand on horse slaughter within Canada and beyond?

Please spare me the basic form letter. I would like to know exactly where you stand. Are you for, or against, horse slaughter? And if you are against the inhumane slaughter of horses in Canada, what do you plan to do about it?

Thanking you in advance!

Yours truly,

British Columbia, Canada Wildfires — Horses in need

British Columbia, Canada Wildfires — Horses in need

British Columbia, Canada is currently experiencing extremely high temperatures and as in a number of recent summers, wildfires are creating challenges for many horse and other livestock owners.

We first became aware of Horse Council BC’s efforts to support the evacuation of horses from fire zones in July of 2017.

We were thrilled to learn that they understood that those volunteering to haul horses (and other livestock)  out of harm’s way were starting to feel the pressure of filling their fuel tanks, and HCBC was able to quickly get funds where they were needed to fill tanks and keep volunteer haulers, and professional haulers who volunteered, on the road.

HCBC also sourced high quality hay and feed for displaced horses and other livestock, and they made sure that those whose animals were fostered at emergency centres during fires, also had a ride back home.

We are incredibly thankful that once again in 2021 Horse Council BC is graciously working hard to raise funds  and is willing to dispense those funds in an extremely efficient and very timely manner.

If you’d like ot help, you can make a cheque payable to  “HCBC Animal Disaster” and mail it to:

Horse Council BC
27336 Fraser Highway
Aldergrove, BC V4W 3N5

OR use the button below to donate online.

The following groups have a proven track record of providing expert support for everything from horses, to goats, chickens, cows, sheep, ducks, emus, dogs, cats and so many more.

They are able to arrange hauling of horses and other animals from within wildfire evacuation zones, and then provide temporary foster care for the same.

CDART and ALERT are run completely by dedicated volunteers and funded by donations.

CDART

(Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team)

100% VOLUNTEER BASED. 100% FUNDED BY DONATIONS.

The Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team (CDART) is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to animal welfare in times of a disaster or emergency, by providing sheltering, fostering or rescue of domesticated animals.

ALERT

(Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team)

The Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT) is dedicated to animal welfare through the preparation for and the actual rescue and shelter of domestic animals and livestock in a disaster. ALERT is a registered charity, is 100% volunteer based, and 100% of our funding comes from donations.

Over the last 15 years, Rebeka Breder developed a unique practice in animal law, and founded the first law firm in Western Canada to exclusively focus on animal law.

She takes on only those cases that advance the interests of animals. She was counsel in the first few cases to successfully save “dangerous” dogs in BC since the law changed in 2019.

She is counsel for the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition, which is appealing to the Federal Court of Appeal in a ground-breaking case, where for the first time, an animal protection group has sued the government over the transportation of animals in Canada.

She was counsel in the first pet custody case in Canada that recognized jurisdiction to allow shared custody of a companion animal.

She is counsel for clients whose dogs were shot by police, in cases which may impact the duties police officers owe to people and their dogs.

She is counsel for a client whose dog was electrocuted while out for a walk on city property, a case which may impact the monetary damages that may be awarded for loss of a pet.

She continues to be heavily involved in the animal protection community in her spare time, including working behind the scenes with a city councillor for making amendments to “aggressive dog” bylaws in Vancouver, being a member of local groups for the protection of animals and making various presentations to city councils for the protection of bears, trees and companion animals.

She was on the board of the Vancouver Humane Society for over 10 years.

She has given over a dozen animal law lectures internationally and nationally. She has been featured in media on various topical animal law issues and had previously appeared in a documentary on the captivity of cetaceans.

She also continues to spend a significant amount of time monthly to mentor students interested in animal law.
