CANADA STOP EXPORTING LIVE HORSES FOR SLAUGHTER

Thousands of live horses are exported each year from Canadian cities (Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg) to Japan, where they are slaughtered for a luxury item, raw horsemeat basashi. [And to South Korea.]

These shipments have been fraught with problems since they began. Repeated investigations have shown dire conditions for these horses who are unfortunate enough to be shipped overseas, then slaughtered on another continent where Canada has no oversight or jurisdiction.

DEMAND AN IMPORT SUSPENSION OF CRUELLY PRODUCED HORSE MEAT FROM OVERSEAS!

NGO investigations and EU audits carried out since 2010 have shown non-compliance with relevant EU requirements relating to animal welfare and traceability of horses in Argentina, Australia, Canada and Uruguay. Horses are systematically neglected and mistreated along the production chain of horsemeat.

They are beaten, kicked and receive electric shocks.

They are malnourished and exposed to extreme weather conditions in slaughterhouse pens and at assembly centres.

Injured, sick and weak horses receive no veterinary care and are left to die unassisted. Currently, EU animal welfare requirements only apply to slaughterhouses.

The assembly centres and transport are not covered by EU rules.

Horses are transported over long distances without water, crammed together in unsuitable cattle trailers, and many do not survive the journey to the slaughterhouse.

DEMAND EDMONTON AIRPORT STOP SUPPORTING THE SHIPMENT OF HORSES TO JAPAN FOR SLAUGHTER

Insist that Edmonton  stop allowing live horse shipments out of Edmonton International Airport EIA. They must make the ethical choice to not support live export [of horses destined for slaughter]!

Edmonton Airport supports this industry by allowing Korean Airlines and other live shippers such as Nippon Air and Atlas Air to operate out of it’s facility. Edmonton Airport is complicit in this violent and unsavoury industry by making money from the take off and landing fees paid by these air cargo companies and airlines.

Canadian Horse Defence Coalition has been working to expose the horse slaughter industry and the live shipment of horses to Japan from Canada. Work by animal advocates and investigators have been helpful in exposing this practice which is abhorrent and not supported by the majority of Canadians and other countries around the world.

A recent news story illuminates how the horse racing industry works … this racehorse breeder is also a bail bondsman, and refers to the baby horses (foals) as a “crop”!

Racehorse Breeders feed the 3-year lifecycle of most Thoroughbred horses used in racing:  60-65% of foals (babies) are trained as yearlings and only 5% of those earn any substantial purse.  The fate of those who don’t race and win is horrific with, as USA Today has reported, at least 7,500 Thoroughbreds each year going to slaughter for human and animal consumption in Mexico and Canada.

SEASPIRACY:  PROTECT 30% OF OUR OCEANS FROM INDUSTRIAL FISHING BY 2030

We are Ali and Lucy Tabrizi, the directors of Seaspiracy. In our popular Netflix Original documentary, we chart our journey across the world as we uncover the horrors of the fishing industry – the most destructive industry in our oceans.

We’ve both loved the ocean for as long as we can remember. The sea has given us so much joy and inspiration, and it was our dream to one day make a documentary about the wonders of marine life.

But once we started filming and began to discover what was happening at sea, we knew the documentary needed to show this side of the story, that for so long has been mostly hidden from view. We witnessed horrific destruction, abuse and corruption, and knew we had to expose how the global industrial fishing industries are killing our oceans, out of sight. We revealed a deafening silence over fishing’s role in emptying our seas, its decimation of habitat, and its role in affecting our climate.

PROTECT OUR LIVESTOCK/PETS BY RESTRICTIONG FIREWORKS IN ERIN

In December my 11 month old colt Captain died as a result of my neighbour irresponsibly discharging fireworks immediately beside the paddock. The baby smashed into the gates of his paddock running in fear.  He was sent to the University of Guelph to the best team possible. He suffered three fractures in his hip and one in his spine which was diagnosed with a CT scan. After much suffering we made the best decision for him to lay him to rest. The fireworks were set off at 8 am in the morning on April 24.  It was so loud I thought it was gunshots.  I called the Police who were not helpful.  They told me my neighbour might have a gun licence.

Erin bylaws state only can discharge fireworks May 24th and July 1 weekend. There is no other forum to report this except a bylaw complaint which was completed. I have requested to speak to the Mayor and town council to have the bylaw amended.

I really need your signatures to present to Erin Council in support of fireworks only by permit and not in proximity to livestock. Please do this for Captain and not let the same devastation happen to any other animals.

Want to thank all of you for your support in memory of my Captain.

STOP THE DESTRUCTION OF ENDANGERED KOALAS’ HABITAT IN NEW ENGLAND, NSW, AUSTRALIA – BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE.

Koalas are listed as an endangered species on Australia’s east coast. Surely the survival of this international icon is worthy of a global effort

Koalas have gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered within a decade.

That is a shockingly fast decline.

The New England area has been designated by the government of New South Wales, Australia as an ARC for the preservation of endangered koalasyet precious woodland habitats are bulldozed and disappearing daily.

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including China and Japan.

This barbaric practice is currently banned in the United States, so horses from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan, and South Korea to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.

CYNTHIA WHITE

CYNTHIA WHITE

THANK YOU CYNTHIA WHITE

We regularly state how we love and admire keyboard warriors, and we constantly remind keyboard warriors of how valuable they are.

Cynthia White lives in the state of Georgia on a farm, that has been in her family since 1860, with 2 horses, 2 roosters, 2 dogs and 5 cats – all rescued!

(That’s one of her rescued horses Gabriel in the picture at the top of this blog post!)

She works full-time as an EMT, and even though her job can be gruelling with long hours and shifts, including night shifts –   you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who works harder when it comes to advocating for animals – including horses.

Cynthia had her first up-close and personal experience with horses when as a child she took riding lessons.  She was instantly smitten and she’s just as in love with horses today as she was then.

Advocacy for animals began in high school for Cynthia.  She was on the debate team and wrote and presented a  speech titled, “Man’s Inhumanity Towards Animals”.

While in high school she was so disturbed after learning about vivisection — where chemicals are needlessly sprayed in the eyes of rabbits to test for safety on humans — that she called Tide.  The operator who took her call laughed at Cynthia’s compassion for animals.

Today Cynthia loves to call Tide out on Twitter. They say they no longer test on animals for products sold within North America, but the same is not true for products from Tide in China.

Cynthia began tweeting about horses being sent from the United States to Canada and Mexico for slaughter when there were about 160,000 horses from America being slaughtered annually.  Today that number is around 30,000 down from a one-time high of 400,000.   She knows in her heart that social media has played a huge part in raising awareness which in turn has reduced the number of horses slaughtered.

While advocating for all equines, Cynthia constantly thinks about her own horses and cringes to think about how they would feel, if they were shipped for 3 days or longer, crammed in with horses they don’t know, in a leg-breaking trailer.

Shipped without food or water, to a location where they would face slaughter — and she is especially horrified to think about how a PETA study confirmed that 30 percent of horses slaughtered are hung by a leg – and “bled out” while still living.

Horse slaughter is far from humane.

When Cynthia learned about the plight of wild horses being rounded up with terrifying, injury-inducing, even lethal tactics, then shipped to slaughter, all because some claim that rangeland needs to be protected for cattle and sheep, she no longer felt good about eating meat — so she adopted a plant-based lifestyle.

She attributes the change in lifestyle to not only creating spiritual growth but also, along with yoga, being able to handle the physically demanding aspects of her job, as well as those half her age.

Recently Cynthia locked arms with the founder and CEO of Global Wildlife Warriors, Saverio Di Sensi.  She has the utmost respect for Mr. Di Sensi and his 4 decades of advocacy for animals.  Cynthia raves about how extremely valuable his mentorship has been.

Between the valuable mentoring of Saverio, GWW’s 40 pages — all over the world — and Cynthia becoming the Global Director of GWW, her voice has more clout and reach than ever before!

BOUVRY EXPORTS HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANT LICENCE SUSPENDED

BOUVRY EXPORTS HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANT LICENCE SUSPENDED

BOUVRY EXPORTS (HORSE SLAUGHTER PLANT) LICENCE SUSPENDED

Read the full “report” from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency here

While the suspension is in effect, the licence holder may not conduct any activity for which licence #3H7GFH7D was issued.

By Liam Nixon Global News

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has suspended the Safe Food for Canadians (SFC) licence, effective Feb. 17, for a meat-processing plant in Fort Macleod, Alta.

In an emailed release Friday, the CFIA said Bouvry Exports Calgary Ltd. failed to comply with regulations related to operational sanitation procedures to prevent cross-contamination of food, and preventative control measures for the detection of E. coli and temperature deviation in carcasses.

The CFIA also determined there was a risk of injury to the public if the company “continued to conduct the activities identified in the licence.”

The licence can be reinstated once the proper corrective measures are taken by Bouvry Exports, but can also be cancelled if that does not happen within 90 days.

Licences can also be cancelled when the licence holder is notified of grounds for cancellation, and given an opportunity to be heard.

Global News reached out to Bouvry Exports on Feb. 23 and 25 for comment, but has not yet received a response. The company closed the Fort Macleod plant for a week in May 2020 after an employee tested positive for COVID-19. Occupational Health and Safety issued three orders related to COVID-19 procedures, and safety at the facility.

JONI

THANK YOU JONI SKIBO LACROIX

We regularly state how we love and admire keyboard warriors, and we constantly remind keyboard warriors of how valuable they are.

One of our favourite keyboard warriors tirelessly advocates for the banning of horse slaughter on Twitter — and she is most definitely an account that you’ll want to follow.

Follow Joni here.

Joni Skibo/LaCroix is a  veteran, who also sold real estate in Michigan, and now lives in Florida.

She’s an avid quilt designer and full time care giver for her husband, a disabled veteran.

Not only did Joni serve her country, she volunteered within her community, and after helping out at an equine assisted therapy centre — Joni was invited to ride her Arabian horse Phoenix in President Clinton’s Inauguration Day Parade.

Joni first heard about the slaughter of horses 9 years ago and she was appalled.

After hearing how many of the horses sold at auction end up on trucks bound for slaughter, she is thankful her daughter’s pony was among the lucky ones purchased by a private home.

Now that she knows what happens at auctions, she is relentless in advocating against selling equines at auctions, and instead of going to a breeder for a horse for her daughter, her family rescued a Standardbred who would otherwise have been slaughtered for human consumption.

Joni is extremely knowledgable about horse slaughter, and one of the things that we love the most about her is — not only how consistent she is with tweeting about a wide range of issues relating to slaughter — but that she understands the value of including a “Call To Action” on every post she tweets or re-tweets.

Joni is currently advocating non stop for the passing of the Safe Act and is constantly reminding people that the most powerful way to be heard is to “Grab your phone”.

It’s urgent you call the Capitol switchboard

and ask to be connected to your Representatives

and both Senators.

Tell them to BAN HORSE SLAUGHTER!
