WILD HORSES ARE ROUNDED UP USING HELICOPTERS
For decades, wild horse management in the United States has relied on aggressive, costly, and often traumatic roundups instead of humane, preventive solutions.
Helicopter roundups chase horses for miles across rough terrain
– Foals and older horses frequently collapse from exhaustion
– Horses suffer broken legs, injuries, and deaths during capture
– Families are torn apart, sometimes permanently
– Tens of thousands are warehoused in long-term holding facilities for life — at enormous taxpayer expense
Despite these roundups, the problem never improves — because removals don’t address population growth. They simply reset the cycle, year after year, at increasing cost and suffering.
A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION – BUT NOT THE FINISH LINE
The U.S. House of Representatives has taken an important step forward for America’s wild horses and burros — but protections are not law yet.
The House-approved FY26 Interior Appropriations bill rejects cruel sterilization, protects healthy horses from ‘euthanasia’ and allocates up to $11 million for humane fertility control using proven, non-invasive vaccines.
Humane fertility control works.
It stabilizes populations, keeps families intact, reduces costs, and avoids the trauma of roundups. That’s why the House bill’s rejection of sterilization and its investment in immunocontraceptive vaccines is so important.
These proposed measures represent a significant shift toward humane management — and they have potential to be followed through on because thousands of people spoke up.
But none of these protections are guaranteed until the Senate acts.
HERE’S THE CRITICAL TRUTH
The Senate has not acted yet.
🐎 EVERY protection can still be stripped out.
🐎 Without URGENT public pressure, these protections can disappear behind closed doors.
A record 83 House members and 17 Senators supported this language — a clear bipartisan signal that the public wants humane solutions.
Now Senators must hear that message loudly and immediately.
This is the moment where public action decides the outcome.
THIS IS TIME SENSITIVE
The team at Ban Horse Slaughter is sounding the alarm. Without urgent public pressure, the Senate can still undo these protections. Contact your U.S. Senators NOW and demand passage of the FY26 Interior Appropriations bill with all wild horse safeguards intact.

I am a constituent who cares deeply about the future of our wild horses and burros, and I urge you to support the FY26 Interior Appropriations bill as passed by the House, with its critical wild horse protections fully intact.
The House bill designates up to $11 million for humane fertility control programs using immunocontraceptive vaccines, explicitly excludes cruel and permanent sterilization procedures by limiting funding exclusively to fertility control, prohibits the euthanasia of healthy wild horses and burros, and maintains longstanding protections against slaughter.
A record 83 House members and 17 Senators supported this language — reflecting bipartisan recognition that our current approach to wild horse management is costly, ineffective, and inhumane. Fertility control is a proven, science-based, and cost-effective alternative to helicopter roundups and removals, and the exclusion of sterilization represents an essential commitment to humane, non-invasive management.
Please vote to pass the FY26 Interior Appropriations bill with these wild horse protections preserved.
Thank you for your consideration,

HORSES SLAUGHTERED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION
Every year thousands of horses are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption, but you can help us ban horse slaughter in Canada and beyond.
Some of the meat is consumed in Canada, and much of it is shipped to the European Union, and other markets, including Japan.
This barbaric practice is currently not legal in the United States, so horses from the United States are shipped to Canada, and to Mexico, to be slaughtered.
In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air to Japan for slaughter, is far from humane.
