A SOFT LANDING | HAPPY ENDING
Along with all our initiatives here at Ban Horse Slaughter – all the ways we are working to put an end to the slaughter of horses in Canada – including horses imported from the USA – slaughter for any purpose — we LOVE sharing happy endings!
Having said that for every horse that is lucky enough to have a soft landing and a guardian angel, how many others are not so lucky?
As you watch the news clip please pay special attention to the use of the word “euthanize”.
This Standardbred horse went from the track to an Amish family and when the horse was involved in a buggy crash, the newscaster states that a decision was made to euthanize the horse.
The way, the Amish family chose to euthanize is NOT what we call humane euthanasia.
Selling a horse to a kill buyer who in turn forces horses on crowded trailers and hauls them sometimes first to a feedlot and then ships them in leg-breaking trailers for 3 or more days to Canada or Mexico – in extreme heat and extreme cold, without food or water or vet care…
Where the next step is to be stunned – and properly stunned or not — strung up and their necks slashed – yes, often while conscious – to bleed out, slowly and painfully…
How dare that be called euthanasia. Torture, barbaric, cruel, and so many other words come to our minds.

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION
It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.
Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including Japan.
The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.
In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan, to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.
ASPCA: “Horse Slaughter is NOT Euthanasia”
Last year, approximately 80,000 American horses were trucked over our borders (to Canada and Mexico) to be slaughtered for human consumption. Until this practice is banned and Congress passes a law against slaughter here in the U.S., no horse is safe. The term...
