SHE’S SAFE & IN A PERMANENT SITUATION

SUFFIELD MUSTANG MARE

SAVED BEFORE BECOMING LION FOOD

January 2024:  A proper update and a special note of thanks – soon!

Tip (Tiphera) was about to be sent to a Nova Scotia zoo (the Oaklawn Farm Zoo in Aylesford) to be fed to the lions.

Thankfully a kind-hearted soul arranged to have her picked up and boarded – and that same kind-hearted soul is looking for a permanent home for Tip.

16 year-old Tip is 15.2 HH, excellent conformation, has been missing her left eye since an accident at 2, has mild ringbone in her right front – but moves well.

She loves to give and receive attention, was used as a youth therapy horse and is being re-homed as a companion horse NOT as a riding horse.

A home inspection and a small donation will be required.

A loving permanent home – a sanctuary has been found!

She is a Suffield Mustang, was NOT born in the wild but in a domesticated horse breeding program and does NOT have papers.

Her foster mother reports:

Tip appears to be an easy keeper, and gets along really well in a herd situation. Currently, she is on pasture only, no grain this time of year but [like most horses] could do well with some in winter. She is very easy to catch, halter and lead.

GOOD NEWS TIP HAS LANDED IN A PERMANENT SITUATION

SUFFIELD MUSTANG ORIGINS

Until 1994 wild horses had open reign on the Suffield military base in southeastern Alberta, moving freely across one of the largest parcels of native prairie in the world.

Over 1200 head, divided by their stallions into small herds, survived on the rich grasses that once supported cattle until the military annexed the rangelands in 1941.

The success of the Suffield Mustangs in surviving and reproducing freely on the open range proved to be their downfall.

In the early 1990s, the military decided the horses were damaging the prairie grasses on the base and the population needed to be controlled. After a great amount of discussion and controversy on the issue, it was decided in 1994 to round them up and disperse them to anyone willing to take one.

This could have been the end of the Suffield Mustangs were it not for a few forward-thinking horse people who recognized the historical significance and the genetic quality of these horses. These people, who adopted horses after the roundup, joined together to form the Suffield Mustang Association of Canada with the goal of promoting and preserving the unique Suffield bloodlines.

The horses are primarily made up of Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Morgan and Arabian stock.  Their numbers continue to increase thanks to the efforts of dedicated breeders.

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including  Japan.

The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT  horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan,  to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.

KEYBOARD WARRIORS ARE INCREDIBLY VALUABLEI often have people tell me they wish they could do more, that they don’t own horses, that they “only” advocate via networking, and their key board. So as I was reading the following post by Wendy Thomson, I was thinking about...
