British Columbia, Canada is currently experiencing extremely high temperatures and as in a number of recent summers, wildfires are creating challenges for many horse and other livestock owners.

We first became aware of Horse Council BC’s efforts to support the evacuation of horses from fire zones in July of 2017.

We were thrilled to learn that they understood that those volunteering to haul horses (and other livestock)  out of harm’s way were starting to feel the pressure of filling their fuel tanks, and HCBC was able to quickly get funds where they were needed to fill tanks and keep volunteer haulers, and professional haulers who volunteered, on the road.

HCBC also sourced high quality hay and feed for displaced horses and other livestock, and they made sure that those whose animals were fostered at emergency centres during fires, also had a ride back home.

We are incredibly thankful that once again in 2021 Horse Council BC is graciously working hard to raise funds  and is willing to dispense those funds in an extremely efficient and very timely manner.

If you’d like ot help, you can make a cheque payable to  “HCBC Animal Disaster” and mail it to:

CANADA SLAUGHTERS HORSES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

It may be hard for some to believe that tens of thousands of horses, including pets, are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption.

Some of the meat is consumed in Canada and much of it is shipped to the European Union and other markets, including  Japan.

The barbaric slaughter of horses is currently not legal in the United States, BUT  horses, including pets and ex-racehorses, from the United States are shipped to Canada and to Mexico to be slaughtered.

In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan,  to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air, is far from humane.
