RACED TO DEATH – REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBLE
THOUSANDS MORE ARE SLAUGHTERED AFTER THEIR RACING DAYS ARE OVER
Goldberg reports on the combination of drugs and overuse that contribute to this nauseating death toll.
The feature, entitled “Raced to Death,” was prompted by the spike in racing fatalities this winter at Santa Anita Park and begins with videos of horses sustaining fatal injuries while racing at the Arcadia, Calif., track.
“The fallout was fast and furious, the deaths quickly becoming a national story,” Goldberg says.
“This much is known: what happened to the horses at Santa Anita is just the tip of an iceberg the public knows virtually nothing about.”
Stating that some of Rarick’s France-based horses may be smaller than many horses in the U.S., Goldberg adds without substantiation, “That’s because American horses are often pumped with steroids from birth to add muscle so they’ll sell for more at auction.”
EXPOSE THAT INSPIRED “RACED TO DEATH”
A 4 month investigation at Churchhill Downs shows death and injuries of racehorses are “business as usual”.
Investigation reveals chronic misuse of drugs, reportedly to enhance horses’ performance and mask their injuries.
FROM BIRTH TO DEATH MOST HORSES USED FOR RACING ARE TREATED LIKE DISPOSABLE COMMODITIES
“You can not believe how many [horses] they hurt and kill before they ever even get to the race track. It’s mind blowing.”
“I would see betters in the stands reading statistics on the racing forms, and I would think they don’t know how sore and injured these horses are, they [betters] are being duped.”
In the video, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens and Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas joke about the use of illegal, painful, dangerous, shocking devices being used to win races.
The reality of horse racing is not the rolling green hills often depicted, instead you’ll find factory farms where syringes are the most important tool.
USA TODAY
FORNEY, Texas — Mike McBarron stepped out of the 96-degree heat and into a shed on his feedlot after loading 37 horses onto a truck. They were headed to Mexico, where they would be slaughtered and shipped around the world for human consumption.
“It’s just a job to me,” McBarron told USA TODAY Sports. “I mean, I don’t attach myself to them. I don’t fall in love with them.”
McBarron, 48, is one of the country’s most prolific “kill buyers,” people who buy horses and sell them to slaughterhouses. They also represent an uncomfortable reality for the horse racing industry.
In 2017, almost 79,000 horses, some of them thoroughbreds, were transported to Mexico or Canada under abhorrent circumstances — crammed into trucks or trailers for more than 24 hours without food or water — to be slaughtered under often brutal conditions.
Exhausted, terrified, dehydrated and hungry, these horses are usually shocked and bled-out.
Sometimes, when the shock is incorrectly administered, as is often the case, horses are skinned and dismembered while still conscious, according to the Humane Society of the United States.
NEW YORK TIMES
36,000 thoroughbreds bred each year. It costs $2,000 per year to keep a horse after his or her career is over.
Make no mistake about it, precious few are “turned out to pasture”. Most end up on a slaughter truck bound for a slaughter plant in Canada – or when bred in the USA, they are sent to slaughter in either Canada or Mexico.
Horse slaughter is referred to as “waste management”.

No horse deserves to die for gambling profits.
Thousands of horses are slaughtered every year because they are not good enough to make it to the track, or they race but don’t win enough and even after they have won – in some cases millions.
Join us in vowing to never watch or attend a horse race and to never place a bet on one either.
“No other accepted sport exploits defenseless animals as gambling chips.
No other accepted sport tolerates the cruelties that routinely result in the injury and death of these magnificent animals.”
