PROPOSED BILL TO BAN LIVE EXPORT OF HORSES TO SLAUGHTER
If passed Bill C-355… prohibits the export by air from Canada of live horses for the purpose of being slaughtered or fattened for slaughter and — again, IF passed — it will make changes to related amendments to certain Acts.
WHY BILL C-355?
Horse slaughter for human consumption is legal within Canada and currently, two plants, one in Alberta and another in Quebec are slaughtering horses for that purpose.
In addition, Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to other countries including Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption.
FIRST READING OF THE BILL
On September 19, 2023, Tim Louis, Liberal MP for Kitchener-Conestoga announced the introduction of a private member’s bill, Bill C-355 AKA the Prohibition of the Export of Horses by Air for Slaughter Act.
THANK YOU MP LEWIS.
From the bottom of our hearts we also want to thank Leah Taylor Roy, Liberal MP for Aurora – Oak Ridges – Richmond Hill for her efforts in bringing this Private Member’s Bill forward.

HORSES SLAUGHTERED FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION
Every year thousands of horses are routinely slaughtered in Canada, for human consumption, but you can help us ban horse slaughter in Canada and beyond.
Some of the meat is consumed in Canada, and much of it is shipped to the European Union, and other markets, including Japan.
This barbaric practice is currently not legal in the United States, so horses from the United States are shipped to Canada, and to Mexico, to be slaughtered.
In addition Canada allows for the transportation of live horses to Japan to be slaughtered for human consumption, and unfortunately the transportation of horses destined for slaughter within Canada, and by air to Japan for slaughter, is far from humane.
