ABOUT BAN HORSE SLAUGHTER
& HOW TO CONTACT
Horses are slaughtered in Canada for human consumption? Really? Seriously? Surely that can’t be so.
Maybe you’re thinking… “Surely, the posts I’m seeing are sensationalized tabloid-style headlines because this is Canada and Canadians don’t slaughter horses and we certainly don’t eat horsemeat”. Right?
There’s a good chance you’re also thinking, “People don’t eat horses, that would be like eating cats and dogs”.
The hard-to-fathom reality is that thousands upon thousands of horses are shipped annually from the USA to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for human consumption. Terrified, they are crammed into leg-breaking trailers, enduring 2 to 3 days without food or water.
The horses slaughtered include many horses NOT bred for their meat. Those slaughtered include discarded horses from the racing industry, rodeo “stock”, and pet horses – again, NOT horses raised for meat.
And before you think that only horses from the USA are slaughtered in Canada – that is NOT the case. Horses slaughtered within Canada include those bred within Canada for the same purposes – for pets, show, racing, rodeo, etc.
We were beyond shocked when we learned people do eat horses and other equines and that horses are slaughtered in Canada for human consumption…
And that although most of the meat is shipped to other markets including Europe and Japan, some Canadians do eat horse meat.
We were beyond disgusted, by the fact that horses are also crammed into regulation-breaking crates and shipped live from Canada to Japan to be fattened up and then slaughtered for sushi.
Oh, and make no mistake about it, the way horses are shipped to slaughter within North America and to Japan, in no way resembles how pet or show horses are carefully transported.
